Is Kyojuro Rengoku Really Overrated?

Let's talk about our beloved yellow-haired Hashira!

Demon Slayer anime spoilers ahead!

Fans have been arguing about Rengoku for ages now. After the Mugen Train Arc of Demon Slayer came out, Rengoku was probably the biggest topic to discuss. His appealing personality and powerful abilities impressed thousands of people, but as it always goes with popular characters, not-so-impressed viewers are always there to comment.

The main complaint the fans have about the Rengoku hype is that his powers were highly overrated. He fought the Upper Rank Three, Akaza, and unfortunately didn't survive the fight. The battle between the two seemed extremely intense, and at some point it looked like we had a chance to see Rengoku winning, but this wish was not meant to become reality. Some fans claim that there was never any actual hope for Rengoku to win, saying that Akaza was just toying with the Hashira and wasn't ever in real danger.

Some more criticism was coming from manga readers who were annoyed by the fact that Rengoku was getting so much attention while other characters dear to them were left in his shadow. But is it really fair to blame anime-onlys for basing their opinions on what they see on their screens?

Although it's quite possible that Akaza was just toying with Rengoku, we can't deny that the Hashira showed his best during the fight. He was doing it solo mode and had no one to help him with the demon. We also can't deny that no matter what the outcome of their fight was, Rengoku had shown incredible strength and composure prior to his encounter with Akaza. Out of all the people who were on the train and three young demon slayers that shared the journey with the Hashira, not a single person died.

Rengoku's powers are not the only thing that makes him appealing.

His charming personality is exactly what does the trick for his numerous fans. He is very enthusiastic and might even come off as eccentric. Rengoku has a strong sense of duty and he's convinced that those who are stronger must protect those who are weaker. He's also got a caring heart and his family means the world to him.

Rengoku strongly believes that practice, hard work and desire to help the ones around you are just as important as having excellent fighting skills. No wonder such a bright personality attracted so many fans and made them fall in love with the Hashira.

No matter what you think of Rengoku, you have to admit that he was a very important character for the series. He established that Upper Rank demons were a great threat, he showed us that Hashira didn't have any plot armor, and he brightened up our lives by being immensely charismatic.
