Is One Piece Overrated? Angry Fans Smash The Series And Its Author With Harsh Criticism

The show gradually loses its quality and yet nobody seems to be ready to admit it.

Despite firmly holding a plethora of various 'best ever' titles One Piece might still be grossly overrated. This kind of opinion was voiced by a former fan of the series who took to Reddit in order to thoroughly describe his growing dissatisfaction with the manga as well as to point out some blatant hypocrisy on the side of One Piece's many die-hard fans.

And while a lot of people were quick to dismiss his criticism, the amount of upvotes that the post has received clearly indicates that the author was definitely far from being the only one discontent with One Piece.

So, what are his problems with the franchise? Well, according to the poster, many of One Piece's issues come directly from the cardinal sin that its fanbase is guilty of — their blind and unquestioning worship of the series' creator and author — Eiichiro Oda. No matter what he does — what kind of questionable decisions he makes — there is never any backlash, only a constant flow of praise complimenting the man's genius.

But is there actually any genius to compliment?

According to the poster, upon a thorough examination it kind of becomes clear that all of Oda's characters are strictly one-dimensional. With the same tropes and personality types making countless appearances, his writing very soon starts to seem unchallenging and unimpressive.

The worst treatment, be far, is being given to women as — unlike many other popular shonen franchises — in One Piece they are entirely robbed of any and all agency in the story and forced to constantly be on the sidelines instead.

And these issues stretch far past just the character writing. The story itself by this point has too long become predictable with its unimaginative attempts to impress its audience with the same never-changing arsenal of tricks that it has been using since the beginning: death cop-outs, sudden revelations, shoehorned in cliffhangers. It all got stale a long time ago and yet the fanbase at large refuses to admit it.

This kind of behavior, in the opinion of the poster, might result in the story gradually losing even more of its quality, as there is simply no intention for the author to try hard since the fans are never ready to give any kind of backlash to even the worst decisions he makes.
