Jean Got Treated Unfairly in Attack on Titan, and Here’s Why

Jean Got Treated Unfairly in Attack on Titan, and Here’s Why

Him ending up with Mikasa might not have been the best decision.

Attack on Titan spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Jean always had a crush on Mikasa and wanted to marry her one day.
  • The ending suggests that he fulfilled that dream.
  • It was unfair to Jean because Mikasa remained loyal to Eren until her last day.

It’s said that Jean is Isayama’s favorite Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) character, and we can understand why. Although he wasn’t that appealing at the beginning of the story with his arrogant demeanor and annoying desire to fight Eren every time there was a chance to do so, he managed to grow on us. He does undergo significant character development and becomes not only tolerable, but actually enjoyable. But why does the ending treat him so badly, then, if the mangaka himself finds him lovable?

It became obvious very early in Season 1 that Jean had a crush on Mikasa. It was something like love at first sight when he saw her passing by. He blushes and compliments her hair. Although Attack on Titan never had romance as its priority, there were various further hints at Jean’s feelings for Mikasa. He was jealous when he noticed how close she was with Eren and genuinely wanted to protect and take care of her.

Jean was daydreaming about having a wife and a family in the manga, and we can see a woman next to him who resembles Mikasa a lot. So the idea of ending up with her was with him for a long time. And it looks like the finale of the series fulfills that dream.

At the end of Attack on Titan Mikasa attends Eren’s grave with her family. Although we don’t have any official proof that the man beside her was Jean, it’s pretty obvious from the context. The man resembles him, Jean always had a crush on Mikasa, he wanted to marry her. And he was close with Eren, so he would understand how important it is for Mikasa to visit his grave and keep even a slight connection to him.

Even though him ending up with Mikasa might be considered a major W for the man and the entire Jeankasa fanbase, there’s still something off-putting about this turn of events. Yes, Mikasa and Jean visiting Eren’s grave make a lot of sense, but why do it together with their kid? And why would Mikasa wear her scarf for her entire life? Why would she be buried next to Eren?

All of that seems highly disrespectful to Jean. It’s like Mikasa married him only because Eren was dead. She stayed loyal to him until the very day she died, even though Jean was her husband and he was supposed to be her number one man after that. We can only imagine how many weird moments these two had because of Mikasa’s obsession with Eren. Was Jean even happy that he got the woman of his dreams, after all?
