Jujutsu Kaisen Blu-Ray Updates Won't Be Coming to Streaming

At best, you could hope to buy the BDs whenever they get licensed.

Summary:

  • Jujutsu Kaisen S2 had huge changes in some episodes for its Blu-ray release.
  • Most of the time, Blu-ray versions don't get streamed on services like Crunchyroll.
  • JJK S2 Blu-ray version probably won't be streamed either.

There have been a lot of controversies surrounding Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen — and MAPPA in general. One of them was regarding the episodes' completion. More specifically, due to poor scheduling and general mess within MAPPA during production, some episodes were said to not be fully completed in time.

Of course, the episodes were fixed on the Blu-rays, with many scenes looking completely different from how they looked in the TV (and streaming service) broadcast. Compilations of these changes can be found online, but fans wonder if these changes will be reflected in Crunchyroll or Netflix versions of the series. However, this is extremely unlikely.

Blu-Ray and Other Extended Releases Usually Don't Come to Streaming

Most of the time, changes made for BDs aren't going to streaming services. It's unclear why exactly that's the case, but many fans speculate that it would require an additional license to stream that version of the show.

After all, often these changes are exactly why Blu-rays sell in the first place: for ecchi series, for example, it's common for the TV and streaming versions to be partially censored.

Sometimes because of this approach, entire episodes end up missing from streaming. An example of this is Bakemonogatari — the last three episodes were released exclusively on a phone app. They were also added to the Blu-ray, and the entire anime was licensed by Funimation — but after the Crunchyroll's merger, they are unavailable.

It's hard to imagine that the Western licensors will care about the Blu-ray changes to Jujutsu Kaisen. Yes, those are significant, but most of the anime still looks the same.

Besides, the series is already incredibly popular — there's no reason to change anything when the only people who care about the BDs are a small fraction of the fandom that already watched the anime.

JJK S2 Probably Won't Be an Exception

Unless there's a large demand for it, Jujutsu Kaisen S2 Blu-ray version won't be released on streaming services. And even if there's a large demand, it's still not guaranteed. After all, the licensors might want to give the fanbase in the US an incentive to buy the BDs whenever they get released there as well.

So far, the Blu-ray has been out for more than a month — including Episode 17, which was regarded as incomplete by many viewers and had over 3 minutes of additional content. If that's still not enough for Crunchyroll to replace the streaming version with it, it's unlikely they'll ever do it.
