Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 18 Delay: When Will Production Issues End?

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 18 Delay: When Will Production Issues End?

It’s almost like the show is cursed.

Summary:

  • There will be a one day delay for Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 18.
  • The delay only applies to streaming releases, TV release is unaffected.
  • A delay like this indicates further production issues, and fans are unsure if MAPPA could finish the show in time.

It seems that Jujutsu Kaisen fans just can’t catch a break. Between the endless controversies about the working conditions at MAPPA, as well as comments from animators themselves, it seems that the series is struggling with production issues. Well, there might be one more now: Episode 18 will be delayed by one day on streaming services worldwide.

Only the streaming service release is delayed

Now, the fact that it will be delayed only on streaming services means the episode will air on TV during its normal timeslot. That is understandable, however: TV schedules are way less flexible. You can’t just push an episode back a day, as there is something else airing that day at that time. A one-day delay for streaming services indicates there are some glaring issues with the episode, the most egregious of which need to be fixed.

Issues with this decision

A delay like that indicates a bigger problem, not to mention not helping the series’ production at all. The fact that an episode has issues with it so huge it had to be delayed doesn’t bode well for the show itself. It also raises a question: if the team takes its time to fix this episode, how does that affect the production of the next one? Perhaps a better idea would have been to take a one-week break, because with the current schedule, it seems like the problems will only escalate. With 23 episodes scheduled, however, the last episode is set to air on December 28th, which would mean even a one-week delay would mean the finale will air in 2024.

The future

Another recent example of an anime the production of which had fallen apart and had to be delayed is Zom 100. Also starting with a one-day delay for streaming services, the entire series’ finale had to be postponed to a later date. There are fears among the fans that the same will happen with Jujutsu Kaisen. However, there is a chance that MAPPA will be able to pull this off and finish the show in time — they are a way bigger studio than BUG FILMS, with more resources available to them. There have also been rumors that the production committee refused to delay JJK beyond 2023. However, it would be much better for the animators (and arguably, for the visual quality of the show itself) to delay the anime to a later date.
