Jujutsu Kaisen: How Is Ten Shadows Technique Inherited? Explained

Jujutsu Kaisen: How Is Ten Shadows Technique Inherited? Explained

One of the coolest techniques in the series.

Summary:

  • Megumi could use Ten Shadows Technique because he’s a member of the Zenin clan.
  • You have to defeat a shikigami to tame it.
  • Each member of the clan has their own set of shikigami.

Ten Shadows is a Jujutsu Kaisen inherited technique passed down in the Zenin Clan. We know that Megumi is a descendant of the clan, that’s why he also has it. But how does it really work and how is it inherited within the clan?

A Sorcerer Has to Defeat A Shikigami to Control It

As you understand from the name of the technique, it features 10 shadows, or shikigami, that a user can summon and control. The only catch is that they have to defeat a shikigami to tame it, which can become quite challenging with such an immensely powerful being as Mahoraga, who’s also one of the shadows.

Although Megumi managed to summon Mahoraga, he could never tame it. And without it, this shikigami couldn’t be controlled by the sorcerer. Shikigami can die, and if that happens, their power is transferred to other shikigami and the sorcerer will be able to summon a stronger form in the future.

Inheritance Process

When a shikigami dies, they cannot be summoned again, their destruction is definitive. That’s why Jujutsu Kaisen fans were unsure about the process of inheriting them. If one user had all of their shikigami killed, will they respawn for the next user or are they gone for good?

The answer is a bit confusing: it’s neither. Each member of the Zenin clan has their own set of shikigami. They are the same, but they are not reincarnations of each other. So if there were two members of the clan alive at the same time, there would be two sets of shikigami, which do not depend on each other.

For example, imagine Megumi and another Zenin clan member. Let’s call him John just for giggles. Both Megumi and John would have ten shikigami, and if Megumi loses his Divine Dogs in a battle, John would still be able to use them. One member’s shikigami have no influence on another one’s.

So if there were 100 Zenin clan members who could use the Ten Shadows Technique, there would be 100 pairs of Divine Dogs.

They would be able to use the same shikigami at once, too. And even make them fight each other if the sorcerers felt like it. Fans think it would be really curious to see two Mahoraga trying to annihilate each other. That would definitely be a battle worthy to compete with the Gojo vs Sukuna level of fun.
