Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 has finally announced its Blu-ray/DVD releases, and the digital copies are scheduled to arrive on March 20, 2024. Just two weeks until you’ll be able to get it.
MAPPA animation controversy
The news about the digital release is obviously exciting, but it reminded fans of the controversy surrounding the Season 2 broadcast. Back when the season was only halfway through, it was revealed that episodes were getting finished moments before release, and some weren’t even finished the way the creative team wanted them.
That’s why when the news about the digital releases arrived, it was natural to wonder if some of the episodes would be fixed or even redone in some way. And we have the answer.
Episode 17 will have new scenes
In case you’ve forgotten, this is the episode that features the Sukuna vs Mahoraga fight. The one that ends with Yuji “waking up” in his body and seeing all the havoc Sukuna has wreaked.
Episode 17 looked special (pun intended) straightaway: there was no opening at the beginning, although you can hear the theme song at the end; most of the episode is not even in full screen, black bars were added for better cinematography. You just know that a lot of creative thought went into the episode.
And that’s why it was so painful for fans to find out that the episode was said to be only 30% of the original vision. It’s necessary to mention that it doesn’t mean the episode was only 30% finished, but it means that there’s so much more that the animators were meaning to do with it.
The digital release announcement has also brought us other exciting news: Episode 17 will receive revised cuts and additional scenes. So there’s a good chance that we’ll see the missing 70% (or at least some) of the original vision the staff had for the episode.
Fans are naturally super excited about the news and the upcoming release. They know the Jujutsu Kaisen animators were under strict deadlines and couldn’t finish the work to their liking in time.
However, we all know how masterfully MAPPA can work on animation when they have the time, so fans can’t wait to see all the extra content that the Blu-ray and DVD copies will provide.
