Kaiju No. 8 Reveals a New Key Visual: What’s Up With Character Design?

Why do the characters look so weird?

Summary:

  • Kaiju No. 8 is an upcoming anime series scheduled for April 2024.
  • The new key visual is out.
  • Fans are unsatisfied with the way characters look in it.

The Kaiju No. 8 (Kaijuu 8-gou) fandom is about to have a great weekend, since the series is going to reveal new information at Jump Festa 2024. It’s only a couple of days before the event, and for now fans have got another pleasant surprise: a new key visual.

Kaiju No. 8 is set in a world where kaiju (huge monsters) exist and cause disasters throughout Japan. To deal with them, the Defense Force has been created. These people risk their lives to protect people from the dangerous monsters. The main protagonist, Kafka Hibino has always dreamed of joining the military and fighting kaiju, but all of his attempts to do so have failed. So now he’s just a sweeper, whose job is to get rid of the monsters’ remains. But his life is about to change when he’s turned into a humanoid monster himself.

The key visual portraying the Defense Force has been revealed. There’s nothing extraordinary about it, to be honest, just badass-looking characters holding guns and being ready to fight whatever monster comes in their way. But this is not what fans seem to be talking about.

Despite having faith in Production I.G (the studio animating Kaiju No. 8) and previously praising the trailer for having 2D monsters instead of CGI ones, people can’t help but notice questionable character design. The most obvious thing is that they are just not visually appealing, and while that might seem like such a shallow thing to mention, it does make sense. We all love a pretty picture, and it’s pointless to deny that.

Fans have noticed the simplicity of characters’ faces back when the trailer for the series was revealed, and they were hoping that it might get fixed later. However, the key visual doesn’t do much for their hope. They say Production I.G is behind the times with their designs and can’t help but be upset about that.

There are some positive thoughts, though, too. As we’ve already mentioned, the monsters do look good in the trailer, and fans are confident that Production I.G will be able to provide great action and fights. And if the character design is the price they have to pay for that, then they’re ready to do so.
