Kakegurui Is the Best Anime to Watch When You Don’t Need Depth

It may be stupid, but you’ll enjoy it.

Summary:

  • Kakegurui was pretty popular back in the day.
  • The series’ writing leaves much to be desired.
  • Still, it’s an immensely entertaining anime.

Kakegurui is a gambling psychological thriller anime that first aired back in 2017. It’s based on the manga of the same name written by Homura Kawamoto, and you can watch it on Netflix now.

Season 1 was quite popular back in the days, but it didn’t do wonders. Its MyAnimeList score is 7.24, which is pretty solid. And Season 2 that aired in 2019 did a little bit worse with its score of 7.19.

But why are we even talking about this series if it wasn’t anything spectacular?

Despite Kakegurui not reaching the Frieren level of success, it was still a great anime. It’s not often that you see something so bizarre and even stupid, and yet so fabulous at the same time.

Kakegurui takes place at a private academy, where students gamble to reach higher positions in the academy’s hierarchy — those who are victorious in games rule the school.

But when Yumeko enrolls in the academy, everything changes. She’s not gambling to be on top, she’s playing for the thrill of it. Danger excites her, and she turns into a complete menace during a game.

The Series Is Completely Insane

When we say that Kakegurui is insane, we really mean it. There’s hardly a sane person in the entire anime (perhaps only Suzui), and this is the true beauty of the series. If you want to dive into complete madness, this show is definitely for you.

Although there’s plot, of course, fans admit that they weren’t really watching the series for some great revelations. The story was okay, but certain bits of it were poorly-written, and some things happening on your screen can force you to say “Well, this is just stupid” at least a couple of times.

But people don’t watch Kakegurui for the Dostoevsky level of psychological analysis of the human psyche. They watch it for the most bizarre feeling of entertainment.

Almost everyone is crazy in Kakegurui, and it might make you feel like Yuno from The Future Diary was actually a pretty reasonable person. Kakegurui is dark and exciting, it knows what its best parts are and isn’t afraid of fanservice.

Speaking of fanservice… A number of fans say that Kakegurui is a series for perverted men or gay women, and we see where they’re going with this. The number of absolutely stunning and sexualized female characters in the series is terrifyingly high.

But you shouldn’t treat Kakegurui as a deep and serious anime. It’s a weird and insane experience that can provide great entertainment for you. You just have to be ready for all the madness, and you’re sure to enjoy it.
