Origin is an action science fiction manga written and illustrated by Boichi, who was originally a South Korean manhwa artist and who later became a mangaka and moved to Japan. You may know his artwork from such series as Dr. Stone and One Piece episode A. Origin started serializing in September 2016. And it’s turning into a movie!
What is it about?
Nearest future, Japan. With the Eurasian Railroad now connecting Tokyo with the northern hemisphere, the number of crimes and terrorist attacks is highly increased. But little do people know that there are intelligent robots living among them. And Origin is one of these robots, their prototype. However, he doesn’t choose to side with his fellow creations, and fully understanding that his quest will leave him with no allies and completely alone in this dark world, he decided to do his best to protect humans from vicious robots.
The series is packed with intense violence and action sequences, so seeing it on the big screen, accompanied by a badass soundtrack feels like a big deal. And Kodansha and Majestic Limited are here to make this dream come true. Origin “will redefine the boundaries of manga and entertainment, while delivering an unforgettable experience to fans worldwide,” the creators say.
Origin was highly praised by critics, and even won the grand prize at the 22nd Japan Media Arts Festival. Its unique premise, compelling characters and stunning art style make it really stand out among other seinen series.
Live action is not the best choice
Despite saying that Origin was rather rushed at the end, fans can’t help but feel excited about the project. Not all of them, that is, of course. Some call Origin pretty “mid” and feel like the latest news of it getting a movie adaptation is rather random and out of nowhere.
It being a live-action movie also raises some questions among the fans. And while some are excited for the CGI robots, a number of people would rather the series be animated. So they’re also asking whether there’s any chance of having an anime adaptation of Origin, too. Fans just want to see more seinen and darker anime, and feel like a live-action project for this series is not the best way to introduce it.
We still can’t help but feel a little bit hyped by the news, because Origin does sound like an interesting idea. And although we would also prefer an anime series, we are ready to give this project the benefit of the doubt.
