Laios’s Sword Monster in Delicious in Dungeon, Explained: What is It Like?

Laios’s Sword Monster in Delicious in Dungeon, Explained: What is It Like?

The most mysterious character so far.

Summary:

  • Kensuke is the name of the monster that lives in Laios's sword.
  • Its name is a wordplay on "sword helper".
  • It is capable of alerting Laios of danger and opening locks.

Back in Episode 3 of Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) Laios' party encountered peculiar Living Armor monsters that they had to defeat and, of course, eat.

But the thing that no one, except for Laios and the viewers, know is the fact that this encounter expanded the party and allowed a curious being to join it. And we're talking about Laios's sword, of course.

What is this thing?

The creature's name is Kensuke, and it is a mollusk-like monster, which Laios discovered after fighting the Living Armor. It lives in the handle of Laios's sword and rarely shows itself, which is very fortunate for the man who wants to keep the monster a secret.

The only visible parts of Kensuke appear to be its eyes that can remind you of antennas. It's also got a number of tendrils that it can extend when the need arises.

What's interesting about the monster's name is that "ken" means "sword" in Japanese, and the kanji used for "suke" can mean "helper". So we can hope that with a name like that Kensuke won't betray our characters and will indeed be a peculiar but loyal ally to Laios.

Kensuke's abilities

When Laios and the others encountered Treasure Insects, the sword is what alerted the man of the danger. The monsters looked like regular coins, and no one realized that they might be dangerous.

Kensuke started moving and rattling, and grabbed Laios's hand as if telling him to draw the sword. That's how he realized that those were not just simple coins, they were Treasure Insects.

Kensuke's tendrils might also come in handy at times. The ability to extend them can help Laios and the others unlock doors in the dungeon. Of course, the party has Chilchuck for that, but there are things that even he can't do.

It's impossible to say how much intelligence Kensuke possesses but there's definitely some. It is not void of fear, and manga readers say that one of the future encounters will prove it.

We don't want to spoil you much, but Kensuke will spring out of Laios's hands during one of the fights at the most important moment. And not because of its monster nature, but due to his cowardice. We just hope that the party members won't eat Kensuke after that.
