But if you're into something dark, give this series a try!

Made in Abyss is a dark fantasy adventure series that aired in 2017 and has become a regular guest in all the conversations about disturbing anime. We are going to try to explain why (without giving away any spoilers, of course) and give you an idea of what this series is about.

Made in Abyss explores the story of a girl, Riko, who lives in a city, surrounding the Abyss, a huge hole descending deep into the earth. Cave Raiders are people brave enough to investigate this abyss and collect various artifacts and proofs of ancient civilizations that are left there. This hole has many levels and each of them provides a different type of danger; the deeper you descend, the more difficult it is to come back alive.

During one of her trips into the abyss, Riko encounters a mysterious robot who looks like a regular boy. The robot has no recollection of what he is and where he's come from. Riko names him Reg and claims that he must have come from the deepest levels of the abyss.

The girl has always been curious about the giant hole she's been living next to and inspired by her mother who's one of the most famous explorers, so she sees it as her chance to satisfy her curiosity and learn the truth about the world. A cryptic note from her missing mother only makes Riko more determined to explore the abyss, and together with Reg, they decide to descend to the lowest levels of the mysterious hole.

It Starts Off Innocent, But Wait Until You See What Happens Next

While starting like a simple adventure anime, this series acquires an unexpected tone shift along the way. The first signs of the darkness that awaits the viewers are presented after several episodes, and the show just keeps getting more and more sinister. Since the main characters are kids, some viewers find the horrible things happening in the anime quite disturbing.

Moreover, fans mention that the manga is even more questionable and problematic, so the anime decided to spare our feelings a little bit. Still, the series is not afraid to show gore and severed limbs, and some viewers even claim the brutality of the anime to be too much.

Despite all that, Made in Abyss is considered to be a great anime. The story has the right amount of mystery and adventure. The plot and worldbuilding are also praised as well as the fascinating atmosphere and great soundtrack.

If you don't mind your anime getting dark and twisted and are not sensitive when it comes to watching fictional kids suffer, Made in Abyss might be a great choice for you. But please refrain from watching it with your younger siblings, as it might get a bit too much for them.
