Maomao and Jinshi Took a Big Step Towards a Romantic Reveal, but Is It Good for The Apothecary Diaries?

Putting them together seems to ruin the charm of the series.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • The romantic relationship between Maomao and Jinshi is the most appealing part.
  • The Apothecary Diaries does not seem to have much room for a full-fledged love story.
  • The relationship between Maomao and Jinshi can ruin the whole atmosphere.

The romantic relationship between Maomao and Jinshi is one of the most important elements of The Apothecary Diaries, and definitely the most appealing part. For many episodes, there were only awkward contacts between them, which sometimes didn't even have romantic overtones.

However, all of this changed in the last two episodes. It seems that we are slowly being exposed to this line, but is it good?

At first glance, The Apothecary Diaries does not seem to have much space for a full-fledged love story. After all, this is primarily a detective anime in which the protagonist investigates crimes that occurred during palace intrigues.

Maomao and Jinshi are the two central figures working on these crimes. At the beginning there is no special connection between them, but gradually their relationship develops and we can notice Jinshi's sympathy for the girl (which she doesn't recognize).

Throughout the 10 episodes, there were only remote hints of their possible pairing, like the hairpin scene, but it didn't go any further. Fans were very surprised to see a very romantic scene between Maomao and Jinshi during the night in the 11th episode. The girl comforted the eunuch, but in her usual cold way.

Episode 12 even showed Jinshi's open affection for Maomao when he was upset after she left the palace and met her later at the festival. Even though Maomao is still cold, it's hard not to notice her growing affection for the eunuch.

It seems imminent

Considering how quickly the relationship between Maomao and Jinshi has developed, we can assume that it won't be long before we see their love line. It seems like a lot of people are looking forward to it. But will it be a good thing? Sure, it can add to the show's appeal, but at the same time it can ruin the whole atmosphere.

We've written before about how important secrets are to The Apothecary Diaries, and how revealing them can spoil everything. It seems to be a similar situation with the relationship between Maomao and Jinshi. It's not the romantic connection or the solved mystery that we enjoy the most, but the anticipation of new details or elements to come.

It seems to be more fun to watch the characters' awkward interactions than their relationship as lovers. Especially this part of the plot is directly related to the origin of the characters, which is also shrouded in mystery. Would you agree that you want to enjoy these mysteries longer?
