Let’s talk about one of the most hyped girls in the anime world!
Mikasa has always been very popular among Attack on Titan fans, and it's no surprise. The girl is one of the most skilled fighters in the series, she’s composed and reserved most of the time. She’s a woman of few words, a woman of action, her collected demeanor exudes power and strength, and these are the traits that usually attract fans in characters. However, we’d like to sneak behind this facade and see what Mikasa is truly like.
Mikasa’s story is not a happy one. She was just a little girl when she witnessed both of her parents die. From a very young age she learned the cruelty of the world and had to take care of herself. But this was not the only turning point in her life that influenced the girl’s entire world. Eren is an inseparable part of her life; being the one who saved Mikasa from her parents’ murderers, he’s become the core of her existence. All this trauma forced Mikasa to grow up very fast and obliged her to become Eren’s protector as a way to pay the debt for her survival.
Speaking about Mikasa is impossible without speaking about Eren. The strong bond these two have influences almost everything the girl does. She cares deeply for the boy and puts his needs and desires above hers, which results in her not being able to develop her own emotions at the right pace. That’s why she might feel incomplete when Eren isn’t around, and she grieves every time someone is trying to take the boy away from her. Mikasa even says once that everything she wants is just to be by Eren’s side, she’s not asking for much.
All this codependency and inability to form her own emotions in the world without Eren, makes her look like a cold machine made only for doing the job right. But this is not everything Mikasa is. Despite her seeming aloof and cold, she is no stranger to emotions. The girl cares for her friends and comrades as well as for other people. When in Season 4 Eren’s actions result in the death of hundreds of people, she’s heartbroken and conflicted because her first reflex is to stand by Eren, but she is beginning to understand that he might not be right.
Mikasa’s usually collected demeanor makes the moments when she lets her emotions out even more impactful. For example, when she thought she was going to lose Armin, she was devastated.
The girl allows herself to cry only on rare occasions, but these occasions make us understand that she’s not an emotionless robot, that only has the job of protecting Eren; she’s also a girl who’s experienced a lot of trauma and is just trying to deal with it.
