Misa Amane Is Actually Not That Annoying

Misa Amane Is Actually Not That Annoying

Misa is probably one of the most underrated female characters in anime.

Death Note spoilers ahead!

If you look up "most annoying anime characters", there's a high chance you'll see Misa Amane on all of the lists. Moreover, if you look up Misa, you may find one of these lists instead of fans praising the girl. But is she really that bad?

No. No, she isn't. And we'll try and explain why.

Let's start with the reasons why she's so unpopular among many Death Note fans. Misa is depicted as a girl who's extremely in love with Light. Her infatuation and sometimes even existence irritates Light to no extent, and since we're watching the series through Light's eyes, it's very easy to catch this feeling from him. Misa's lack of intelligence and depth is also often mentioned when it comes to Death Note discussions. However, some fans strongly believe that we can find a fascinating character behind this shallow facade.

Misa's obsession with Light has actually a pretty solid explanation. Kira (the name given to Light by his followers in the series) killed the criminal that had murdered Misa's parents, which became the base of her affection towards him. She doesn't know the true identity of Kira at first, but she feels connected to him already. Her character has motivation, she's not just a mindless fan service girl who's there to make Light look more desirable.

One of the main reasons for criticism is Misa's lack of intelligence.

It's difficult to discuss someone's intelligence in a series that has such characters as Light and L, whose brilliance can overshadow pretty much 95 percent of the world's population.

Is Misa smarter than these two geniuses? No. But is she just a foolish doll? Also no. She finds out that Light is the Kira even though he was trying to hide it. She manages to trick Higuchi into revealing himself as another Kira.

Misa's loyalty to Light can't go unmentioned. The trauma of losing her parents and having no one else influenced her life a lot, and she longs for connection. Everything she does, she does to make Light happy, and she sees no life without him. Fans still speculate if she actually committed suicide after Light's death, but the anime strongly hints at that.

Moreover, Misa is a really important character for the story. She was necessary for Light and L to continue their battle. Misa was the lever that moved the plot forward and gave it more details.

Anyway, the criticism of her character cannot be called baseless. Some fans feel like she had much more potential than was shown in the series, and we have to agree with that. Still, we believe that she's a great character with a lot of (even if sometimes hidden) depth who's suffered from a case of oversimplification by the fandom.
