Seems that the mangaka’s works sell very well.
Summary:
- Mono — a 4-koma manga by the author of Laid-Back Camp — is receiving an adaptation.
- It focuses on a group of girls in a photography club.
- It will be made by Studio Soigne.
Laid-Back Camp (Yuru Camp△) is one of the most popular modern “cute girls doing cute things” anime. With the anime having already gotten two seasons, a movie and a spin-off short, another season is coming — but that’s not the only work by the mangaka (who uses the pseudonym “Afro”) that will have an adaptation.
Mono — a 4-koma manga by Afro — was recently announced to have an adaptation. Fans immediately pointed out similarities between the two works, so if you like Laid-Back Camp, chances are you’d like this one.
It’s similar to Laid-Back Camp
Mono is not a camping-themed manga, though. Instead, it focuses on a group of girls in another hobby — photography. It mostly follows the same slice-of-life structure, though, so it will be an excellent recommendation for those who like Laid-Back Camp.
In fact, one can argue that a hobby of photography is actually adjacent to camping. Both go hand-in-hand with appreciating nature. With Laid-Back Camp being praised for its backgrounds (which are actually real-life photographs with filters over them), Mono might appeal to fans of Afro’s other series even more.
It’s different in format and way less popular
That said, Mono is also quite different from Laid-Back Camp. The most notable difference is that Mono is a 4-koma, which Laid-Back Camp isn’t.
4-koma is a format of manga where every page consists of 4 panels of similar size — these usually have less plot than normal manga. Many 4-koma manga have been adapted into CGDCT anime — even K-On! was originally one.
More importantly, Mono is much less popular than Laid-Back Camp. As such, an announcement for the anime adaptation came as a surprise for the fans. Not that they’re complaining, though: it’s hard to ruin source material this simple.
Perhaps the adaptation was influenced by the fact that Laid-Back Camp sells extremely well, so the producers saw an opportunity in adapting Afro’s other running manga.
What else do we know?
As of now, we don’t have much information on Mono — outside of the revealed key visual. We know it will be a TV series, but we don’t have a date or even a year. That said, some of the key staff has been revealed.
The most interesting fact is that the anime will be made by studio Soigne — a relatively new studio that had no other works before. As such, it’s impossible to guess if it will look good or not.
