Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu) is very dear to a lot of viewers, and some even consider this anime the best isekai out there.
And it’s true that Mushoku Tensei does a lot of things well. It has great worldbuilding and a wonderful exploration of magic. The story is truly engaging and very easy to get into. But there’s one thing that so many fans just can’t stand, and this is the main protagonist of the series, Rudeus, also known as Rudy.
Pathetic pervert
He used to be a grown man, but he got reincarnated as a little baby in a fantasy world. However, he has his memories intact and the same personality, so fans treat him like an adult rather than a kid.
From the very first episode viewers start feeling disgust towards Rudy. For most of the episode it feels like everything the man cares about is touching some breasts and seeing girls naked. It’s always about something sexual with him.
And it doesn’t get much better. Of course, a lot of characters are often shown to be terrible human beings at the beginning of a story. That leaves a lot of room for future character development. And Rudy does evolve a bit, but fans still think it’s not enough.
Rudy’s involvement with teenage girls also makes viewers question his personality a lot. They cannot forget that he has the mind of a grown man, and it doesn’t matter what he looks like: he stays an adult. That’s why his sexual interest in young girls is considered highly problematic by the fandom.
Fandom is divided
The hate for this character has become so strong that it has split the Mushoku Tensei fandom into various parts. Some fans try to be chill about it and even defend Rudy’s actions, and others cannot think of a way to describe him other than “disgusting.”
There are also a lot of fans that couldn’t even keep watching Mushoku Tensei due to how much they detested Rudy. He’s the main protagonist and we have to follow his adventure, it’s important to root for him at least sometimes for the story to work, and some fans just couldn’t do it no matter what.
Mushoku Tensei still has quite a compelling plot and the rest of the characters are nothing like Rudy, so if you can ignore his personality, you might find the series extremely enjoyable. However, if you can’t, this anime will definitely not be your cup of tea.
