Naruto Is a Lot Darker Than You Think, Here’s Why

Naruto Is a Lot Darker Than You Think, Here’s Why

It’s not as simple as it looks.

Summary:

  • There’s a common misconception that Naruto is a kids’ show.
  • There’s more darkness in Naruto than you think.
  • A lot of it was censored, though.

Naruto is truly one of the most popular and iconic anime series out there. It’s an example of a perfect shounen for so many fans, and it’s recommended to anyone who’s not afraid of watching hundreds of episodes.

Another great thing about Naruto is that it’s appropriate for young audiences. It’s perfect for teenagers, and even those who are around the age of 10 can enjoy the anime without having severed limbs and sex scenes thrown into their faces.

Is It a Kids’ Show?

Because of that, there’s a common idea that Naruto is an anime for kids. It lacks the darkness of most modern shounens such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, and thus it’s less serious. But it’s not entirely true.

We won’t argue that Naruto is nowhere as unhinged as Attack on Titan, but it has its fair share of darkness, too. It’s not as explicit as you might expect an action shounen to be, but the depth is there, you just have to look for it.

One of the most famous plot points in Naruto is what happened to the Uchiha clan. They were slaughtered by Itachi, it was a major genocide caused by one person trying to save his brother.

This plot twist alone can tell you a lot about how dark Naruto can get. It doesn’t need any graphic violence to shock you. All you have to do is imagine the depth of trauma that this one event brought upon the series’ characters, and it’s already enough.

But it’s not even where Naruto’s darkness ends. There are experiments on children, there are monstrous demons, there are slaves and masters, there’s cruelty and suffering.

Perhaps all of the above isn’t portrayed the same way it is in the aforementioned Jujutsu Kaisen, but we can’t deny that all those things are in Naruto indeed.

We’d Like to See R-Rated Naruto

Fans think that this common misconception about the lack of darkness in Naruto comes from the censorship of the series. It was executed in a safe-for-young-teenagers way, that’s why it’s treated as a show for kids. But in reality, there are a lot of dark concepts that most kids won’t even properly understand.

And it makes fans upset that there isn’t any R-rated Naruto. They’d really like to see what this series could’ve been, had it been made with other demographics in mind. They think it would’ve turned Naruto into a completely different show, an even better one.
