Netflix Reveals a Strangely Heartwarming New Pokemon Series!

Humans and Pokemon just coexisting and having fun.

Summary:

  • Netflix revealed a trailer for Pokemon Concierge — a stop motion Pokemon series.
  • It’s a touching story about a new hire on a Pokemon resort, and a Psyduck she befriends.
  • The series will start streaming on Netflix on December 28th.

Western Pokemon fans are already eagerly awaiting this December for the long-anticipated English dub of Pokemon Horizons — the first mainline Pokemon anime that doesn’t feature Ash Ketchum as the main character. Still, Netflix thought it was imperative to make everyone’s Holiday season even better with the announcement trailer for their upcoming Pokemon Concierge:

Resort island for Pokemon

Pokemon Concierge tells the story of a fantastical Pokemon resort island (you know, like a place we send our Pokemon to when they’re not storming Gyms and gang hideouts with us) through the eyes of Haru. She’s a new employee at this resort, and she wants to make all the Pokemon on the island just as relaxed as she is — which, of course, includes a particularly flighty and difficult Psyduck. Who, without a doubt, will be the Pokemon she’ll bond with the most.

Over the course of the series, we are promised a relaxing and deeply touching story of friendship, as Haru explores this beautiful place, sees all manner of Pokemon just peacefully coexisting, and helps them to enjoy their time on the island and have fun. Honestly, the trailer alone already brought tears of joy to our eyes.

The Pokemon Company is no stranger to changing things up in their animated side projects. In 2020-2021, they’ve released a series of Poketoons — short animations ranging from Looney Tunes-inspired misadventures of Scraggy and Mimikyu, to a coming-of-age story of a young trainer and her Nidoran, to even a Ghibli-esque slice-of-life about a little girl wanting to befriend Slugma that heats up her home. Then, in 2022, as a part of Bidoof Day, they released Bidoof’s Big Stand — a story of winning a Pokemon Championship against all odds from the viewpoint of a Bidoof, rather than a trainer. And in summer 2023, we’ve seen Pokemon: the Path to the Peak — a story about a real-life afterschool club, in which kids are playing Pokemon TCG

Still, Netflix’ newly announced show feels like an even bolder step out of their comfort zone. Not only Pokemon Concierge seem to lack any Pokemon battles (which are, like, one third of the entire Pokemon formula!) while somehow making it work — this anime doesn’t use 2D or 3D animation at all! Indeed, the entire series is made in stop motion, with clothed plastic dolls as humans, and toys (mostly high quality stuffed or quilted dolls) as Pokemon! And despite our reservations for such an idea, these visuals perfectly suit the cozy, heartwarming mood of the series!

Netflix will start streaming Pokemon Concierge on December 28th, making it a perfect Holiday gift for the Pokemon fans around the world.
