The new Netflix series is okay, but it’s not the Onimusha fans wanted.
Summary:
Netflix released the new samurai series.
Fans complain about it not following the lore.
Onimusha is not that bad, but it could have been better.
Onimusha is a fresh Netflix anime based on a series of video games developed and published by Capcom. The anime series focuses on Miyamoto Musashi, whose “blade slices through evil as he traverses a land plagued by poverty” as the official YouTube trailer description says.
Another story about a samurai
The story explores the life of a great swordsman, Musashi, who possesses a demonic weapon, capable of absorbing souls. This action-packed adventure promised a lot and made anime fans excited to see a couple of cool samurai fights, and gamers — to see a project based on their beloved game.
The official trailer got fans quite excited, and they mentioned it looking amazing and giving them Dororo vibes and even making them hope to see the Onimusha game series rebooted by Capcom in the future.
But was it worth the hype?
Unfortunately, it seems like it wasn’t. The reviews and ratings are in, and it feels like Onimusha will not be competing for the title of the best anime series of 2023. It hasn’t been a long time since the series’ release, and a lot of fans are yet to experience the story, but all episodes are already here, and those who’ve had the time to finish Onimusha are not filled with much excitement.
Fans admit that the series is entertaining enough, and they didn’t feel the desire to drop it or finish it as fast as they could and be done with it, but it lacked a certain amount of excitement that was needed to call Onimusha truly great.
The vibe and atmosphere of Onimusha is quite attractive, but the animation is what ruins it for some viewers. Three-dimensional characters along with 2D backgrounds just didn’t do it for a number of fans, and they mention the overall picture looks weird.
Onimusha's canon was another reason for the disappointment of true fans. They wish the series didn’t ignore a big part of it and upset the lore nerds. It doesn't really feel like Onimusha. The story itself was rather boring, as the viewers say, and didn’t really offer any intricate points and interesting ideas.
Fans more or less agree that Onimusha cannot be called a lousy series, but it’s just not as good as they expected it to be. It’s worth watching, especially if you like the samurai aesthetics, but don't expect too much.
