New My Hero Academia Movie Isn't Going to Be What Fans Want

Okay, but when are we getting a movie about previous One For All users?

Summary:

  • The fourth movie of My Hero Academia, titled “You’re Next,” is scheduled for this August.
  • While movies are also written by Horikoshi and are considered canon, we haven’t seen many elements of them implemented in the anime.
  • The movie will cover a brand-new storyline, which disappoints fans and raises concerns over the production of S7.

The fourth movie of My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia), titled “You’re Next,” is going to premiere this August. As it has already become a tradition with MHA movies, it’s going to be another one with an anime-original storyline. Fans aren’t exactly thrilled about it: My Hero Academia has a lot of side content to cover without needing to resort to more fillers.

MHA movies are canon, but they hardly matter

So far, the three released My Hero Academia movies haven't exactly made any impact on the plot of the anime. Yes, they are written by Horikoshi, and some elements from them actually appear later in the manga. If you’re only watching the anime, though, they are mostly skippable.

While the movies are actually canon, that fact seems barely relevant most of the time. In fact, it feels like fans don’t even want them to be canon: Episode 16 of Season 5, which served as a prologue for the third movie, World Heroes' Mission, wasn’t liked very much, with many viewers finding it pointless.

What is the movie about?

The new movie looks like it is going to be a storyline about a “dark version of All Might” villain. This setup isn’t exactly original, and many fans don’t find it interesting in any way, feeling like there are better things to focus on right now.

A lot of MHA fans seem to want an adaptation of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, a spinoff manga that is very much beloved by the community. Even outside of Vigilantes, though, it’s not like MHA is out of content to cover: we still haven’t seen the first fight between All Might and All For One, for example.

A movie focusing on the life of one of the previous wielders of One For All would also be cool, but we aren’t getting that, either.

Concerns about the movie

One thing you need to remember is that shounen movies were always considered inferior to their respective TV series. Most, if not all of them, are filler content that usually doesn’t have any impact on the plot — with some of them not fitting into the timeline at all.

One notable exception here is the One Piece fandom, which likes a decent amount of movies for their favorite series.

A genuine concern that stems from the fact that the MHA movie is going to air soon is that the TV series might have worse animation because of it. After all, it would make sense for the studio to focus on the movie production.

Fans bring up the example of MHA S5 looking worse because the movie was made during it — that said, some also feel like the pandemic was actually to blame, so there’s hope for S7.
