Once Great: Why Dr. Stone is Not So Popular Anymore?

Entering the Stone Age.

Summary:

  • No one's talking about Dr. Stone: New World Part 2.
  • With each new season there was less and less science.
  • Characters moved from talking about science to sorting out their relationships.

There seems to be no lack of awesome shounen series right now. Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) has just ended, the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen continues to air, fans are looking forward to the sequel of Chainsaw Man, and unexpectedly for everyone, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Sousou no Frieren) was a big surprise. In short, now is a great time to be a shounen fan. But at the same time, we have to note that past shounen hits are gradually fading into oblivion, becoming uninteresting to the audience, which increasingly prefers inventive new projects.

Do you remember that there was Dr. Stone?

Dr. Stone is a series about schoolboys Senku Ishigami and Taiju Oki, who have to save a civilization that has suffered from a mysterious cataclysm. All people have turned to stone, and only Senku and Taiju, relying on scientific knowledge, can restore the world. The series' aesthetic mixes images of the primitive world with science fiction. The anime adaptation began airing in 2019 and quickly became one of the most important titles of the decade, praised for its pacing and science-based approach.

With two seasons and a special (35 episodes + 1), the series gained wide popularity, and it seemed that a new anime giant had appeared before our eyes. The anime consistently receives high critical acclaim and it is still considered an important phenomenon in the anime industry. However, Season 3 is now coming out, and it seems... no one is talking about it. What happened?

The reasons are obvious

If the series began as a show with a relatively strict scientific basis, then with each new season there was less and less science. By the third season, Dr. Stone finally became a fantasy, which did not please the hardcore fans of the show. The same can be said about the “realism” of the series. Dr. Stone, at the beginning of its run, captivated viewers with a down-to-earth look at an unusual apocalypse, but over time, more unrealistic elements appeared in the series.

Previously, the show's advantage was maintained by great dialogue, but with each season, the number of interesting dialogues (as well as exciting situations) became less and less. Many viewers notice that now the conversations in the series sound very simple, as in a typical shounen anime. The characters moved from talking about science and engineering to simply sorting out their relationships, and there are plenty of such scenes (often much better performed) in other shounen.

In other words, at the beginning the show had an obvious uniqueness (both visually and plot-wise), but now it's a typical anime series that is only watched by hardcore fans or those viewers who are uncomfortable to stop watching because of the time already wasted. Now it seems like viewers just want to know the ending as soon as possible.
