One Plot Twist in the Attack on Titan Finale That Served No Purpose

Just why?

Attack on Titan finale spoilers ahead!

Summary:

  • Eren’s mom plot twist was weird.
  • Dina not eating Bertolt seems not a good enough reason for Carla’s death.
  • Eren not commenting more on the situation doesn’t feel right.

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) finale has been analyzed meticulously by everyone who’s ever shown any signs of logical thinking. A lot of plot points were found questionable by the audience, and not everyone truly enjoyed how the story ended and where it led some of its characters.

Eren’s actions resulted in his mother’s death

One of the things that surprised fans the most was the plot twist with Bertolt and Eren’s mom. Dina Fritz, who had been turned into a mindless titan, was coming into the city with the rest of the hideous giants. And turns out she was supposed to eat Bertolt and become a Titan shifter. However, Eren used the Founder titan's ability to change the past and made Dina walk past Bertolt. This resulted in Eren’s mother’s death, since Dina was the one who devoured her in front of the boy. So Eren was the reason for his own mom’s demise.

Attack on Titan explains this like this: it wasn’t Bertolt’s time to die, he was to play a significant role in the future events of the series, and Eren knew that. On top of that, his mother’s death provided more motivation for Eren to keep fighting, and impacted his anger towards the unfairness of the world.

The plot twist was rather questionable

Fans find a lot of faults with this idea. First of all, Carla was seriously wounded, there was no way for her to be saved. If it wasn’t for Dina, another titan would have probably eaten her anyway. Besides, some fans don’t really see the importance of Bertolt, he’s always been the least interesting character from the Annie/Reiner/Bertolt trio, so they don’t really believe that his death would have affected the story that much. That’s why this plot twist seems like a cheap way of subverting expectations and adding a shock factor to the ending.

Another huge issue is that this detail is given this little attention in the series. His mom’s death became the turning point for Eren’s life and personality, it traumatized him to no end. And we don’t even see him breaking down due to the fact that his actions resulted in her death. He doesn’t blame himself much, he mentions it as just another one of the sacrifices he had to make. This feels especially weird after seeing Eren break down over Mikasa finding another man. Was it really more terrifying for him than becoming an indirect murderer of his own mother?
