It’s like there’s nothing else in the series anymore.
Manga spoilers ahead!
Summary:
- Oshi no Ko had a very strong start.
- It looked like revenge would be the leitmotif of the series.
- Fans mostly discuss the manga romance nowadays.
Back when Oshi no Ko started coming out, no one expected it to become a romance series. The prologue of the series threw a lot of things at readers: there was murder, reincarnation, loss, death, trauma, revenge.
Basically, any exciting thing you may want your seinen manga to be was in Oshi no Ko. But the manga has changed a lot since then.
Most Controversial Relationship in the Series
Since the moment Aqua and Ruby learned each other’s true identity, the manga has been going into another direction. Ruby realized that Aqua was Gorou, the man she was in love with in her previous life, and she hasn’t been able to look at him in a different way ever since.
Ruby and Aqua’s kiss in Chapter 143 caused a lot of controversy within the fandom. A lot of fans were confident that it was the beginning of the Aqua and Ruby romance and that the story is gradually building towards them ending up together.
It split the fandom into two teams: one wants nothing else than for this romance to be true, and the other is unsure about all the incestuous sides of such a relationship.
It feels like since that moment everything the fandom has been able to discuss is ships. Is Aqua going to be with Ruby? Will he choose Akane? Will he settle for Kana? It’s like this is the most crucial thing in the manga.
All That’s Left Is Romance
The story used to be about something else. It started with Aqua wanting to avenge his mother and punish his father for what he’d done. But the revenge plot line was done so poorly and sometimes even unexcitingly that it seems to interest few people nowadays. They’re more intrigued by the ship wars instead.
It’s not the fandom’s fault, the manga itself is to blame. It made readers believe that it would be about revenge and now character drama takes the lead, while revenge feels like a background plot.
It’s upsetting that fans just don’t have more intricate plot twists or events to discuss, and they’re practically forced to fight over ships, trying to decide who the best girlfriend for Aqua is.
Fans begin to care less about the manga with each chapter, and it’s disappointing. Oshi no Ko had so much potential, but it feels like the manga is losing its charm bit by bit.
