Parasyte Live Action New Visual Is Out: Anime Fans Are Ready to Be Disappointed

Is a live action series a good idea?

Summary:

  • Parasyte: The Grey is the upcoming live action series based on the Parasyte manga.
  • It will follow a different protagonist, but will be set in the same universe.
  • Fans don’t know what to expect for now.

Parasyte: The Grey is the upcoming South Korean live action series adaptation of the Parasyte (Kiseijuu) manga, written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki. It is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on April 5, 2024.

The original manga explores the world infested by parasitic aliens, capable of taking control of human bodies to destroy humanity. One such parasite was trying to take over Shinichi, when the boy suddenly woke up and interfered with the process.

As a result, the parasite’s mission failed, and the two are now forced to coexist in a single body. Shinichi names the parasite Migi, which means “right” in Japanese, because the thing ended up in Shinichi’s right hand after failing to take over his brain.

The live action adaptation will not follow Shinichi and Migi, though, and will have a new protagonist, and a female one, for that matter. But Jung Su-In suffers the same fate as the original protagonist: a parasite fails to take over her body, and the two begin to live together.

The new visual features Jung Su-In, and judging by the way it looks, the parasite will stay in her right eye instead of her hand. Since it’s also on the right side of her body, will they keep the name of the parasite and call it Migi, too? Or will they use the Korean word for “right” (Oreunjjok)?

Anime fans’ predictions

Live action adaptations are a sore spot for all anime fans. We’ve seen some pretty well-made ones, such as One Piece (2023) and some of the most hideous and meaningless ones like Death Note (2017). And fans wonder which route the Parasyte adaptation will follow.

If we try to summarize fans’ expectations, we’ll get something like this: they’re curious to see what it’s going to be like, are getting ready to be disappointed, and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

It’s a good thing that the live action adaptation won’t follow the original story because it will allow for more creativity, and fans won’t criticize it for diverging from the manga story.

Fans don’t want Jung Su-In to be a copy of Shinichi and would like to see an original story arc. What’s the point of having a different protagonist if you’re still going to choose the exact same path?

So right now, fans don’t really know what to expect. They are trying hard not to be critical of the project before it’s officially released, but it’s not easy, knowing the history of live action manga adaptations. The only proper way to find out if it’s a decent series or not is to wait for April 5, and see for ourselves.
