Parasyte: Long Gone but Not Forgotten

Parasyte: Long Gone but Not Forgotten

Or why you should watch this series.

First aired in 2014, Parasyte: The Maxim tells us a story of a simple teenage school boy, Shinichi, whose life completely changes one day when he falls victim to a mysterious parasite.

Parasites are weird aliens that descend upon Earth and are no strangers to devouring human beings. They are capable of inserting themselves into human brains and impersonating their host, while turning them into a monster. One of such parasites tries to infiltrate Shinichi’s mind during his sleep but fails as the boy suddenly wakes up. As a result, both of them stay in the main protagonist’s body. Due to its failure, the parasite is forced to live in Shinichi’s right hand, which later serves as the origin of its name, Migi (which is the Japanese for “right”).

While being understandably disgusted and shocked by a parasite living in his hand at first, Shinichi can’t help but form a bond with Migi, and that’s when the story gets really impressive. Together, they encounter many other dangerous human-eating aliens and they learn to cooperate to make the best out of their abilities and skills. Such a bond cannot possibly leave any of them unaffected, and we see Migi gradually gaining pieces of humanity while Shinichi loses bits of it.

While having a very common premise of alien creatures seizing human bodies, Parasyte is not just another science fiction horror story, and the exposition is already enough to prove it to you. But it’s not the only thing this anime has got to offer. It explores various topics such as humanity, death and loss, psychological problems, friendships and bonds; even if it sometimes does it in a pretty bizarre way.

The series has received great reviews and fans seem to really enjoy the dark thriller that the story is. They say that the story is really well-written, the characters are believable and relatable, the chemistry between Shinichi and Migi is undeniable and it brings the show this weird but endearing vibe that no one expected. On top of that, fans also mention the pacing of the show being really balanced, drama and conversations are perfectly combined with outstanding action scenes, bringing an excellent amount of tension and making you anxious and entertained throughout the entire series.

If you haven’t seen this fantastic anime yet, this is your sign to do it. Don’t let the show being pretty old deter you from watching it because this is the case of you paying for the whole seat but only needing the edge of it.
