Seriously, it's like everyone forgets about the awful things he has done.

Summary:
- Itachi Uchiha often gets too much praise: he definitely wasn't a good person.
- He did everything with the interests of the village in mind, which is somewhat similar to Danzo's behavior.
- Itachi is still a great character, he just isn't a good person.
Itachi Uchiha is undoubtedly one of the most iconic characters in Naruto. He has plenty of fans, and it's understandable: his story is incredibly tragic, and him being a very strong fighter naturally attracts a huge crowd.
However, some feel that Itachi gets too much praise. After all, despite being a good (and tragic) character, he's definitely not a good person. They bring up the facts that Itachi wasn't a good brother to Sasuke, and that things he's done, while understandable, in the end mean that he doesn't deserve to be praised as much as he is. And in fact, this subsection of fans might actually have a point.
Itachi mostly cared about the village
Itachi's modus operandi seems to have been pretty simple. He sacrificed almost everything for his village multiple times. This includes his dignity as a person: he willingly became a scapegoat for the sake of Konoha's survival. His only weakness was his love for his brother.
The theme of self-sacrifice for the sake of the village is a recurring one in Naruto. Multiple Hokage have done that, as well as many other notable characters — it is often seen as a noble action.
That said, Itachi had definitely made mistakes: even if he did love Sasuke, he didn't need to treat him with such cruelty. It feels like he was even ready to sacrifice Sasuke's sanity for the sake of the village, which makes fans question the extent of his love.
A parallel between Itachi and Danzo
Others compare Itachi to Danzo Shimura. Danzo has been the head of ROOT, an underground organization within the Leaf Village's forces, who were mostly doing dirty work.
Danzo felt like the village was above everything, including personal bonds, and was one of the masterminds behind the Uchiha Massacre. In a sense, Danzo's mindset is very similar to that of Itachi's — yet Itachi is considered a hero and Danzo is considered a villain.
While Danzo was a power-hungry person who tried to seize power and become Hokage, you can argue that he was still trying to do it for the sake of the village. The key difference is that Itachi ended up helping the main characters and saving Sasuke against Kabuto in the end, but that arguably doesn't redeem him, either.
You're free to like Itachi, but don't forget the bad things he's done
Overall, there has to be a more nuanced take on Itachi. Yes, he's an interesting and cool character, but that doesn't make him a great person. It's understandable why people like him, but it's possible to be a fan of a character while also admitting he made a lot of mistakes.
