Pokemon: Paldean Winds Offers First Peek Into Pokemon Horizons

Pokemon: Paldean Winds Offers First Peek Into Pokemon Horizons

In case you want to check the region early.

Summary:

  • English dubbed Pokemon Horizons starts in just a week or two.
  • You can visit Paldea early if you buy the latest mainline game.
  • Another option is to watch Pokemon: Paldean Winds.
  • The animation is amazing, and we love, love, LOVE the brief Tinkaton appearance.

With the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in November 2022, it was only a matter of time for a new installment of Pokemon anime to also arrive. In fact, the new Pokemon Horizons: The Series began airing in April 2023 — in Japanese, with all the Pokemon names woefully untranslated. As always, the English dub is fashionably late — it will start airing this December, meaning we’re only a week or two away from starting our new adventure in Paldea.

Though, maybe you’d like to arrive a little bit earlier?

Early invitation to Paldea

If you’d like to start your tour through the new region early, there are two ways. The first is to buy Pokemon Scarlet or Pokemon Violet for Nintendo Switch, and play through the story. It even has two DLCs, one of which (the Teal Mask) was released in September, and another (the Indigo Disk) will be released on December 14th, 2023! Though finishing the game before English dubbed anime starts might be a bit too difficult at this point.

The second way is to watch Pokemon: Paldean Winds (Houkago no Breath) with us. It’s an ONA consisting of four 10 minute shorts, meant to introduce us to the wondrous and colorful Paldea region, as well as some of the characters we meet both in the game and in Pokemon Horizons!

Afterschool breath

So far, three out of four shorts have been released, following three trainers of this region’s starters — Fuecolo, Quaxsly and Sprigatito (well, its final evolution Meowscarada, as one of the three trainers is very serious about battles). Though out of all Pokemon shown, our favorite is definitely the hammer wielding diminutive pink menace Tinkaton, regardless of how little of it was shown.

Paldean Winds ONA is animated by OLM — the very same studio that made Pokemon anime since the very beginning. This studio is also, surprisingly, behind some of our other favorite shows — like Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) and Restaurant to Another World (Isekai Shokudou) — so it’s little wonder that both this ONA and the upcoming Pokemon Horizons look as good as they do. The studio had truly perfected this fluid, dynamic style of animation that was so controversial back in the days of Pokemon Sun and Moon anime.

You can watch Pokemon: Paldean Winds for free on the official Pokemon YouTube channel.
