Rewatching an Anime Series: Pros and Cons

Rewatching an Anime Series: Pros and Cons

Why do we keep coming back to some series?

Summary:

  • There are different opinions on rewatching anime.
  • You may find new details during a rewatch, or even understand the story better.
  • There are dozens of new series airing each month.
  • By rewatching the old ones, you deprive yourself of new experiences.

What do you think about rewatching an anime? Do you do that to revise the story before the new season is out? Do you just love it so much that you can’t say goodbye to this world even after the series is over? Or do you never do that because there’s no point?

Pros

There are actually a lot of reasons for rewatching a series. We’ve recently discussed how Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) only gets better during the second watch, and this is not the only example.

Vinland Saga is notorious for its deep philosophy and outstanding character development. And there are even two reasons why rewatching it might be a good idea.

First of all, there are really a lot of things and concepts in Season 2 that you have to contemplate, and a number of fans even suggest not to binge the series to fully understand everything and think it through. Watching it for the second time might help you achieve the same result: you’ll notice new things, and all of the ideas will become clearer.

On top of that, it’s curious to go back to Season 1 again after the second one to see how great Thorfinn’s character development is and what he was like at the beginning of the story.

We also all have our comfort series, and it doesn’t matter if it’s an old classic like Death Note or Elfen Lied or if it’s something newer and popular, like Jujutsu Kaisen or Demon Slayer; we just like to come back to our favorite worlds from time to time whenever we’re feeling down and don’t want to start something new.

Cons

Still, there are those who aren’t really keen on rewatching series. They don’t see the point of doing so. There are countless new anime coming out each season, and at least 4-5 of them might interest you.

So why spend time on something old and forgotten when you can experience a new adventure?

Online debates and discussions are also part of the anime experience, and people tend to have conversations about series that are relevant at the moment. No matter how much you love Code Geass, you’ll never find as much interesting discourse about it as you can now find about Frieren, for example.
