The anime has a new director and character designer.
It airs in October 2024, and fans expect it to be two cours long — but that’s not confirmed.
The third season of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu) has been one of the most anticipated anime sequels in recent times. Fans have been eagerly waiting until the release of any additional information on it.
Thankfully, at AnimeJapan 2024, we got quite a lot of information about the anime. One of the things revealed was the new trailer, which made fans generally happy. There are still some concerns about the upcoming anime, but they’re mostly minor. It’s scheduled for October 2024, and here’s everything we know right now.
The trailer looks great and made people happy
Quite some time has passed since the initial announcement of Re:Zero Season 3. While there was a teaser PV and a key visual previously revealed, this was the first time we got a trailer that shows a substantial number of scenes from the new season.
The first thing that fans noticed was how great the animation was. The fight scenes looked absolutely amazing — while Re:Zero was never focused entirely on action, this is certainly a welcome surprise. The one issue fans had with S2 was the fact that it was a downgrade in animation compared to the first season — and S3 looks better than both.
Another thing fans noticed was the fact that characters were slightly redesigned. This has been a more controversial part, as any changes in character design for the series will ultimately result in some amount of fans being displeased. That said, the overall look of the anime is not going to change in any major way — outside of improvements in animation, it seems.
Do the new Re:Zero character designs look better or worse than the old ones?
Multiple staff changes
Those who paid attention to the staff credits on the S3 announcement probably noticed that the anime changed some of its core staff members. While it’s still being produced by studio White Fox — which made the previous seasons — the director and the character designer are different.
The character designer will be Haruka Sagawa, who previously adapted the character designs of the Call of the Night (Yofukashi no Uta) manga to anime. The new director is Masahiro Shinohara, who was actually previously involved with Re:Zero — he was the episode director of S1 Episode 2.
While the trailer looks undoubtedly good, some fans are concerned about the overall tone of the series. A huge part of what made the anime so good was the incredible direction, giving the viewers a constant sense of uneasiness. Re:Zero is, first and foremost, a mystery thriller — and some fans feel the focus might shift towards the action scenes instead.
Fans suspect that the original director of the series, Masaharu Watanabe, was responsible for S2 having many extended episodes. While it’s not confirmed, they are worried S3 will go back to normal episode length — the current arcs of Re:Zero are pretty dense, and it would benefit from longer episodes.
Some of the staff remains the same, however. We’re still getting Kenichiro Suehiro’s music, and Masahiro Yokotani is still responsible for adapting the script into the anime form — it will still be the same Re:Zero fans love. The changes will be mostly related to the visual presentation, not the content of the anime.
What should we expect?
Re:Zero fans normally care more about story arcs than light novel volumes. The first season adapted the first three arcs of the source material, which were relatively short.
The second season — both parts of it — was dedicated to adapting the fourth arc, one of the longest in the series. It’s the longest in the web novel and the second-longest in the light novel — consisting of six volumes.
For comparison, the fifth arc — which will be adapted in the third season — consists of five volumes. It is shorter than the previous one, but not by much. Fans feel that two cours will still be needed to cover the entirety of it — although perhaps the anime won’t need to skip the opening and ending most of the time like it did in the second season.
It is currently unknown if the anime will be two cours long — and if so, whether it will be split or continuous. The second season being split-cour was likely caused by some production issues, as it literally ended in the middle of an important scene — and it also didn’t look especially good compared to the first season.
Because of that, fans are speculating the third season will be two continuous cours long — but again, this is not confirmed yet. We will only know that closer to the release date, which is October 2024.
At this point, we just don’t have enough information to speculate on the length — and whether or not we'll get more sequels. Considering the popularity of the anime, they are likely, though.
