Right Time to Stop: Should the Black Butler Manga End?

Right Time to Stop: Should the Black Butler Manga End?

When enough is enough.

The beginning of the Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) manga goes back to 2006 when, written and illustrated by Yana Toboso, the series was first published in a Square Enix's shonen manga magazine. It's been almost twenty years since then, but Black Butler is still going, and the fans are starting to lose their patience.

This series has seen some great moments in its life. The 2008 anime series used to be (and still is) extremely popular. The fandom, the shippers and content creators were so loud, that there was no doubt: Black Butler is an anime phenomenon to be reckoned with. No matter how much the second season was criticized, it's difficult to deny that the anime adaptation was an absolute hit.

After three seasons, numerous OVAs and a big film, fans were still in love and asking for more, and it looks like they have been heard: another manga arc is getting animated and will be released in 2024. It's difficult to deny that if fans and the anime industry keeps getting back to Black Butler, it means that the audience isn't ready to let it go.

But is it the same way with the manga?

Fans have started talking about the manga going into a weird direction several years ago. We don't know if anyone still remembers when there was only one Ciel. The pacing of the manga and its questionable story decisions have been debated over for a long time. But it finally seems like fans just want to give up and ask Yana Toboso to get it over with.

Some readers raise their concerns about massive plot points and questions that have been there almost straight from the beginning being forgotten or kicked down the road. New characters don't seem so interesting for them, the plot twists become weak and it feels like the story becomes more and more stale with every chapter. Fans' trying to analyze every little detail is sometimes more interesting and engaging than the actual manga itself, and readers are tired.

The question of when Black Butler is going to finally end is often met with a genuine "wait, is it still going?", and that's totally understandable. The gorgeous art style of Yana Toboso and the characters that have become so dear to the fans seem like the only reasons some people keep reading.

This all leads to the fans' desire to finally see the ending. They've lost interest and are exhausted and just want to learn how the story ends. And the only question is "when are we going to find out?".
