Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is an anime adaptation of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley.
The series deviates a lot from the original story, and not everyone found it enjoyable.
Some fans think, though, that it’s better than seeing the same things all over again.
Scott Pilgrim was originally a series of graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The series revolves around a part-time musician Scott Pilgrim, who falls in love with mysterious Ramona Flowers, who turns out to be in possession of superhuman abilities. She’s not the only one, though, and Scott finds out that her exes are some sort of supervillains, whom he has to defeat in order to date the woman of his dreams.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a fresh Netflix anime series and an alternate retelling of the original graphic novel series. It aired on November 17th 2023 and consists of 8 episodes. Due to Netflix release strategy, all the episodes are already available online and ready to be judged. And judging is what fans are especially good at.
Not what everyone expected
Those who have already finished the series have mixed feelings. The series is very dear to a lot of comic readers, and it goes without saying that expectations were high. But does the anime meet these expectations?
A number of fans suggest that it doesn’t. The series starts on a very good note. The first episode of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, they say, is close to perfection. It’s a faithful adaptation of Volume 1, and pacing might be the only thing that seems a wee bit off. But then Episode 2 arrives, and viewers are not even sure that they’ve clicked on the right link and are watching the Scott Pilgrim series. Fans are upset with the way the series treats Scott, and they say the entire point of the novel series was to see him develop, but they got more Ramona instead. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, since she’s also fairly loved by the fans, but what about Scott?
Fans used to love Scott Pilgrim for it being a coming of age and slice-of-life series, and this aspect seems to have disappeared in the anime for the sake of a detective story. It feels like the new series lacks everything that made the original Scott Pilgrim so special.
Other people disagree, though. They see the new adaptation as an expression of the author's growth. They are glad that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a fresh and evolved take on the story. The creator matured as a person, and he’s capable of criticizing his past work and altering it, while acknowledging how much it meant to the fans. They feel it’s much better than adapting the same thing over and over again. After all, new is always better, huh?
Did you enjoy the new Scott Pilgrim series?
It’s all nice, but where’s Scott, though?
