Sequel Issues or How To Ruin An Anime Series

When a show is not so fun anymore.

Have you ever watched a really awesome anime, where everything is great: the characters are believable and relatable, their chemistry is undeniable, the story is so well-written that you can’t stop clicking on “next episode”? We’re sure you have! However, nothing lasts forever, and sometimes you keep watching the series and it just doesn’t do it for you anymore. So why is that?

When someone mentions Season 2 of an anime being not as good as the first one, the Promised Neverland instantly comes to mind. Season 1 was a great success and received a lot of praise from anime fans. It had everything an excellent show should have: mystery and suspense, engaging story, charismatic characters, surprising plot twists and a satisfactory conclusion. No wonder, we all wanted to see the sequel so bad. But, unfortunately, in vain. The second season received a lot of criticism from the fans due to its questionable pacing and storytelling choices. Deviating from the manga wasn’t really a winning decision, and the series has become one of those where fans strongly suggest reading the source material instead of watching the adaptation. Moreover, the second season ends on a cliffhanger that offers no conclusion to the overall story of it.

Speaking of the adaptation problems, we should mention Tokyo Ghoul. The first season of the anime was quite entertaining and a lot of fans enjoyed the brutality and insanity of it. While having slight differences from the manga, it was still quite a success. However, there came Season 2, and fans were not so thrilled anymore. They heavily criticized the adaptation for not following the manga, which led to poor character development and a boring story. Besides, fans also noticed a significant drop of the animation quality compared to Season 1.

Another show that suffered from the “Season 2 effect” is Rising of the Shield Hero. Fans admit that the second season had its moments, but overall it was no match for the first one. They say they really tried to get involved into the story, but it was impossible to really care about what was happening on the screens, viewers just didn’t feel any hype for the show. Fans also mention lack of character development: Naofumi used to be a character that worked hard for everything, and now he’s just someone loved by the fans. The characters are not interesting anymore and fans can’t bring themselves to care about their interactions.

We hope you can still concentrate on the first seasons of these shows and remember why you loved them so much. At the end of the day, we can all pretend that the sequels never existed, so that they won’t be able to ruin your experience with an anime.
