Should You Watch ‘Ajin: Demi-Human’ in 2024?

Should You Watch ‘Ajin: Demi-Human’ in 2024?

The answer will strongly depend on your opinion of CGI.

Summary:

  • Ajin is a 2016 CGI anime series.
  • Its story is incredible, but its CGI leaves much to be desired.
  • The Ajin manga is much better than the anime adaptation.

Ajin: Demi-Human is an anime adaptation of the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Gamon Sakurai. Both seasons of the anime aired in 2016, so it’s a rather old series, but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it now, in 2024.

The series is set in a world where mysterious immortal humans known as Ajin exist. Since they have immense powers that they can easily use for evil deeds, they have been labeled a threat to society and hunted by it.

Kei is an ordinary school student who knows little about Ajin. But a sudden accident reveals a shocking truth to the boy: he is one of Ajin himself.

The Story Is Great, But The Visuals Are… Questionable

The series was highly praised for its phenomenal story. Ajin was scary and thrilling, there were a lot of mysteries and secrets, the action was there, the characters were compelling. It seemed like everything was almost perfect. But there was one big “but.”

The thing is, Ajin is a CGI anime, it’s not like the 2D series that you love so much. And it pains us to say it but Ajin looked hideous.

CGI anime are a sore spot for a lot of otaku. They can’t even stand mere seconds of CGI being used in 2D series, so why would they want to watch one that is 100% like that?

There are good examples of CGI anime, of course, and Girls Band Cry that started airing in April 2024 is one of them, but Ajin is, unfortunately, not. It will hurt your eyes to watch it at the beginning, and some fans admit that this feeling doesn’t go away with time.

That’s why recommending Ajin is a complicated thing. The story is really exciting, and if you’re a fan of dark fantasy, there’s a high chance that you’ll absolutely love it. But if you haven’t seen any CGI anime before, starting with Ajin might not be such a great idea.

Did you like the CGI in Ajin?

Read the Manga Instead

Because of that, a lot of fans suggest reading the original source instead. The manga is better than the anime adaptation for a number of reasons, and CGI is definitely one of them.

On top of that, the manga has a different from the anime ending, since the adaptation had finished airing before the final chapter arrived. Fans say that the source material is close to perfection, so if you’re really interested in Ajin, but detest CGI, this story is better experienced in the manga.
