Solo Leveling Anime Did This One Thing Wrong

Solo Leveling Anime Did This One Thing Wrong

It’s a minor detail, but it’s still upsetting.

Summary:

  • The anime lacks the humor of the manhwa.
  • This was done intentionally.
  • A number of fans wish the series was goofier.

Solo Leveling (Ore dake Level Up na Ken) is a pretty serious series, and there’s not much room for humor and silliness. And it’s understandable, the anime is about fighting monsters, survival, and personal development and growth. However, it doesn’t have to be like that completely.

It’s Too Serious

The anime adaptation does a lot of things right, and it’s a significant improvement over the manhwa in the way of storytelling and paying attention to side characters. But it takes away almost all of the small hilarious moments of it.

There are various jokes in the manhwa, and chibi characters being goofy and funny. When Jinwoo was naming Igris (the scene that happened in Episode 12 of the anime), he thought of “Blood-red Igris,” but then commented that it’s a rather edgy name.

The manhwa also has a lot of weird and comedic-looking faces, and it makes fun of different situations. The overall tone of the series is lighter in the manhwa, and fans say that they’ve noticed the difference, and it’s a significant one.

The anime adaptation took inspiration from the manhwa when it came to character design and story progression but decided to stick to the web novel’s tone of voice, which was a bit more serious.

That Was the Intention

In one of the interviews, the director of the Solo Leveling anime adaptation, Shunsuke Nakashige, said that this change was intentional. Chibi faces and goofiness don’t go that well with Solo Leveling, they think, so this decision was made to avoid spoiling the impression.

Introducing silliness into the series might have ruined the immersion and made the story less dark, and the intention was to show how serious and dangerous the world of Solo Leveling is.

This sentiment is understandable, of course, and a number of fans admit that they prefer it this way. But it’s still upsetting.

There are a lot of anime that are extremely serious and packed with action and drama (like Jujutsu Kaisen or Attack on Titan), and yet they manage to find the balance between seriousness and silliness.

Some series add hilarious moments after the ending theme, and fans think it would be a great idea for the Solo Leveling adaptation as well. It’s too early to try to ask for goofy OVAs yet, but this might also be a good idea for those who are craving something silly.

Would you like Solo Leveling to have more goofy moments?
