The premise is rather intriguing
Solo Leveling is going to explore a story about the world that’s connected to the realm of magic and monsters via “the Gate”. Hunters are people with special superhuman abilities, whose job is to battle these monsters and protect humanity from the dangers they bring. Twenty-year-old Sung Jin-Woo is one of these people, but he’s known as one of the weakest hunters there are. After a mission goes terribly wrong, he’s one of few survivors, and now he’s given a chance to gain a rare power that’ll make him one of the greatest hunters in the world.
With such an intriguing premise and all those stunning trailers, Solo Leveling feels like a huge project. The immense hype is here, and anime fans are eager to finally experience this adventure. But is it possible to predict how big this project is going to get? And can it ever compete with such industry giants as Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) or Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)?
The plot is not really phenomenal
Solo Leveling is based on a South Korean web novel written by Chugong. And the novel readers are the only ones who can try to predict the future of the series, since they know what Solo Leveling is like and are more or less aware of what to expect.
Those who have read the novel say that it’s definitely worth your attention. However, they doubt that it’ll ever become an international phenomenon, ready to stand the comparison to the biggest anime.
Solo Leveling is very enjoyable and it has its hype moments and breathtaking fights, but the plot seems to be the thing that’s criticized the most. It’s not bad, no. But it’s not great, either. Readers mention it being quite obvious and predictable most of the time.
However, we should never forget about the power of animation. Let’s be honest, we all know where Demon Slayer is going with its story, and a big number of anime onlys can already predict what the ending is going to be like. But it doesn’t mean that the anime is not worth watching. Ufotable has been doing such a great job on Demon Slayer, from character design to the soundtrack.
And there’s hope that Solo Leveling will get the same treatment. If the animation is spectacular, if the characters are relatable and appealing, magic will happen, and we will get one of the best series of 2024.
