Not to upset Lawrence stans, but it feels like the main duo’s dynamic will mostly depend on Holo and her personality. They’re both main protagonists, and Lawrence is indeed compelling, but Spice and Wolf has a vibe of an “if you don’t like the girl, you won’t like the series” kind of show.
But Spice and Wolf veterans say that this is not going to be an issue. Many viewers will fall victim to Holo’s charm, it’s inevitable and unavoidable. She’s one of the best female characters in anime, and she’ll be proving it more and more in upcoming episodes.
Holo Is Surprising
If you knew nothing about Spice and Wolf, the beginning of the remake might have surprised you with its main female lead. Holo is not just a cute wolf girl who helps people with their harvest, she has a strong personality.
Holo loves teasing Lawrence and everything about her screams “flirty” sometimes. She doesn’t seem to know boundaries and can easily upset people around her with uncareful comments.
But there’s another side of her, too. In Episode 2, she makes Lawrence really angry and upset with her comments about wolves eating people.
Holo quickly understands it and tries to show sympathy and care; she even apologizes. Which means she’s not just an eccentric pretty girl that’s in the story to amuse the audience, she’s playful but still kind.
Moreover, the first two episodes only barely scratched the depth of Holo’s personality. She’s an extremely deep and complex character with a huge set of traits, and each of them will make you love her even more than the previous ones.
Spice and Wolf veterans joke that even the two seasons of the original anime couldn’t fully express how intricate Holo’s personality really is. This is one of the reasons why they crave the full adaptation this time.
