If you’re an anime newbie and you ask for a series suggestion, there always comes a time when someone tells you “Code Geass”. This anime has become such an iconic phenomenon that people cannot forget about it even now, almost 17 years after the series finished airing.
Why is it so good, though, and why do we keep talking about Code Geass in 2024? (Happy New Year, by the way!)
What is it about?
Short premise, if you know nothing about Code Geass: the Holy Empire of Britannia is establishing itself as a dominant military nation. Japan is no longer a proper country, but just a piece of the empire, renamed to Area 11. Lelouch is a Britannian student, who finds himself caught up in a military conflict.
Due to an accident, he acquires a peculiar power that allows him to control the minds of other people. And this is all that we’re going to reveal for now because spoiling Code Geass is not something we’d do to you.
Why is it so special?
One of the main reasons for the Code Geass series being so popular is Lelouch himself. Otakus like to compare him to Death Note’s Light Yagami and call these two the best anime protagonists of all time. And we can’t really say that we disagree with this statement. Lelouch is an extremely complex character, and watching him put his intricate schemes into motion is nothing but entertaining for sure.
The mecha genre is also something that can attract viewers to Code Geass. It’s fair to say that this genre is quite specific, and it can become both an advantage and a disadvantage for you. But even if you’re not the biggest fan of the genre, giving Code Geass a try is a good idea.
But all the fans agree that the ending is what makes Code Geass truly special. We know, we know, you need to get through 20+ episodes to get to the ending, and what’s the point of that if you’re not enjoying the story?
However, the finale is where the series truly shines. Fans even go as far as to say that Code Geass’s ending is (one of) the best anime ending ever. This is already a good enough reason to finish the show: just to know what everyone is so amazed by.
The recently announced Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture (Code Geass: Dakkan no Rozé) movie doesn’t allow the series to sink into oblivion, either, so the Code Geass fandom is more alive than ever now. So if you’ve been waiting for the right moment to finally experience the series, this is the best time to do it.
