They can’t take it anymore.

- The anime is hated because of its characters.
- It is still very popular, and keeps getting new seasons.
Rent a Girlfriend (Kanojo, Okarishimasu) revolves around Kazuya Kinoshita, a college student who was recently dumped by his girlfriend. Feeling lonely and heartbroken, he decides to try out a mobile app, which allows him to rent a girlfriend for some time. That’s how he meets Chizuru Mizuhara, who becomes the new target of his affection. Kazuya believes the girl is just toying with him, though, and rates her poorly on the app, which leads to the girl being infuriated with the main protagonist.
The premise sounds like a light and silly romantic comedy, which the series actually is, so why is it hated so much?
Fans are annoyed by Rent a Girlfriend characters
The main reason for such a reaction from the fans seems to be the main protagonist himself, Kazuya. The boy is the only one responsible for making his life miserable, and he has no idea how healthy human interactions work. All of his problems could’ve been solved by a simple conversation, but he keeps making the fool of himself over and over again. Besides, fans call Kazuya a creep and truly dislike his stalking tendencies and overall behavior.
The main protagonist is not the only one that fans mention when criticizing the show. They say that every other character in Rent a Girlfriend is straight up annoying, and it irritates them to no end just to watch them do things and interact. The series just doesn’t have any likable characters, and this is sad.
Despite all the hate, the series is very popular
This all leads to the question of why the series keeps getting new seasons, when it’s so loathed by the audience. And the answer is very simple: being bad doesn’t mean being unpopular.
Not everyone is here for deep and meaningful conversations, it’s not a war drama after all. Some viewers just come for pretty girls and the harem genre, they don’t care about the complexity and characters making smart decisions. Simply put, “trashy” series can still be highly entertaining, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
A number of fans also mention that a good half of the Rent a Girlfriend audience keeps watching the show purely for the sake of talking about how bad it is. Anything to keep people entertained, right?
No matter how much some people want the anime to end already, its popularity won't allow it. And we have a feeling that the series will keep going until viewers (including haters) stop talking about it.
