Takemichi From Tokyo Revengers Is Widely Hated For A Reason

Main character who is hated more than the villains.

Spoilers ahead!

When you hear Tokyo Revengers, what comes to mind? Kids beating each other up? Gang wars? Or an annoying main character who cries every time and literally does nothing for the plot? Personally, the last sentence comes to my mind, even after reading the whole manga. Actually, the problem is not only with Takemichi, but with the manga itself.

Ken Wakui, the mangaka, was a gang member himself — that’s why he knew what he was writing about. But what happened when he decided to include time travel — we don’t know. The author himself got confused in the story (maybe that’s the reason he decided to end the manga with a wedding). And in the end we have a confusing story, an annoying main character, and a sense of disbelief about what’s going on in the story (kids literally beating each other to death and no one can stop them).

Let’s talk about Takemichi. Poor guy with no sense of direction, who apologizes for everything. He learns about the death of his ex-girlfriend and somehow travels back in time. He joins the gang, gets into various situations and cries most of the time. When he tries to help someone — he just makes things worse, even in the future (or in the present).

Takemichi jumps back and forth to fix the consequences of his actions, but still makes everything worse. Why do we even need such a main character? Manjiro Sano or Izana Kurokawa are more enjoyable and more interesting characters. Even the side characters such as Mitsuya or Hakkai are more interesting and better developed than Takemichi. When they appear in the story, they draw your attention.

Some fans compare Takemichi to Shinji Ikari, but a worse version of him. You can't empathize with a character who cries and can't solve his problems, and who only has a development in the last few chapters of the story. Takemichi isn’t a main character, he is a side character with a lot of screen time.
