S2E22 of Jujutsu Kaisen had a bed scene with Mei Mei and Ui Ui.
Fans found it absolutely disgusting.
It was the point of the scene, though.
Last week, when Season 2 Episode 22 of Jujutsu Kaisen hadn’t aired yet, manga readers were already discussing the upcoming Mei Mei and Ui Ui scene and wondering whether it would be in the anime adaptation. As it turns out, it was in the new episode, and thus began another Jujutsu Kaisen controversy.
What is the issue?
The answer to this question is very simple: Mei Mei and Ui Ui are siblings, and Episode 22 showed them lying in bed and Mei Mei inviting him to spend the night with her. The whole scene gives some incestual undertones. Even though we don’t really know Ui Ui’s actual age, he looks fairly young, hardly older than a teenager, so Mei Mei not only checks an incest box with that scene, but the grooming one, too.
Fans, of course, can’t ignore this, and the Mei Mei hate is going strong. Despite the scene and its implications being absolutely disgusting, a number of fans suggest that it was supposed to be like that. It’s not just a weird fetish of the mangaka, the scene had a purpose.
Why was it in the series?
Fans suggest that Mei Mei was never meant to be a likable character, and the bed scene was meant to make you hate her even more. You were supposed to be disgusted with her lowlife behavior, that was the point. She’s something like Mahito, who’s exceptionally good at being bad, she’s just not a curse.
Her attractive design only makes her character more peculiar. Mei Mei is a very beautiful woman, and a sexualized one for that matter. She attracts you with her looks, but turns out to be rotten to the core, and this is an amazing paradox. The Ui Ui scene was not in Jujutsu Kaisen to make you go “yes, mommy”, it was to make you feel appalled, and it worked perfectly.
Seeing Mei Mei and Ui Ui in Malaysia also makes fans think of Nanami, whose dream was to retire and spend a peaceful life there. But his dream was never meant to be fulfilled, and he died in Season 2. This makes the scene even more impactful.
Nanami was an honest man, a great teacher, ready to sacrifice his life for the sake of future generations. While Mei Mei is a revolting manipulator, capable of grooming her own sibling. And this is an example of cruel irony because Nanami died, and Mei Mei is living his dream.
