The Ancient Magus' Bride: Did Grandmother Lie to Philomela?

The Ancient Magus' Bride: Did Grandmother Lie to Philomela?

It would not be shocking, to be honest. The old hag doesn’t care about her granddaughter at all…

The Ancient Magus’ Bride (Mahou Tsukai no Yome) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • In Ep.10, Philomela’s Grandmother Lizbeth tries to sacrifice Philomela to some god so that she can have her son back.
  • Lizbeth had promised Philomela a meeting with both of her parents. However, we doubt that she ever planned to revive Philomela’s mother.
  • If Philomela is sacrificed, she probably won’t get to see her father as Lizbeth had promised. In other words, the old hag lied to Philomela.

In Episode 10, it turns out that Philomela is supposed to be a sacrifice in whatever ritual her Grandmother Lizbeth has been setting up to revive Philomela’s parents. However, something is not right. If Philomela is to be sacrificed, she cannot see her revived parents, can she? Besides, Lizbeth seems too focused on Adam. Does she even plan to revive Philomela’s mother?

Lizbeth is to Blame for Everything

In the latest episode, we learn that Lizbeth forced Philomela to forget everything about her parents when Philomela was just a small child. In other words, Philomela did a lot to revive her parents without remembering them. That could also be the Grandmother’s influence; she could have made Philomela think that she wanted her parents revived when in reality she did not even remember them.

Just as Lizbeth forced Philomela to forget, she could have forced her to yearn for approval. Many fans pointed out that Philomela’s need to be approved by her Grandmother or parents seemed almost unnatural. That helped Lizbeth and made Philomela into an obedient puppet. In general, everything that is wrong with Philomela is probably Lizbeth’s fault.

Sacrifice

Now that Lizbeth wants to sacrifice Philomela, we are quite sure that the old hag lied. She would not allow Philomela to be with her father, and she probably never intended to save Philomela’s mother. It might be for the best, of course; we are still terrified of what might come out of Lizbeth’s ritual. But in any case, Philomela was probably intended to be the sacrifice since day one of the plan, which means that Lizbeth lied.

We are not exactly shocked, to be honest. Lizbeth has been shown to be extremely callous and willing to do anything for her own gain. Now, while summoning some sort of god using Philomela as a sacrifice, she even gives Philomela some of the praise she had always wanted. Lizbeth is a manipulator and a monster. Let’s hope, at least, that she does not get her way anymore, now that Philomela knows she can ask others for help.
