In Episode 10, we learn that Maomao’s father Luomen worked in the inner palace.
Ah-Duo and the current Emperor had a son 17 years ago, who died within a year of his birth.
Fans wonder if Jinshi could be the secret son of the current Emperor.
Fans also wonder if Maomao could be the child born back then since she is 17.
We love theorizing about the characters of The Apothecary Diaries. As we learn more about the Emperor — and Maomao’s father — we get more clues, which means more theories!
Maomao’s Father
We were absolutely correct when we figured out that Maomao’s father Luomen used to be a eunuch and apothecary in the inner palace. We now know that Luomen was the one who helped Ah-Duo during birth seventeen years ago. Back then, the Emperor was just a Prince, and Ah-Duo was his only concubine. The child apparently died when he was only one year old, but fans are not satisfied with that. Why did they state Maomao’s age in the same episode anyway?
Is Jinshi a Hidden Son of the Emperor?
One thing that fans noticed is that Ah-Duo looks very much like Jinshi. That makes some people think that Jinshi is that baby, who was hidden for some reason and proclaimed dead, possibly, for the sake of safety. To be honest, Jinshi does not look like he is 17; he looks older. But that would be a problem for every theory we have about Jinshi. The current Emperor’s brother was born at the same time as Ah-Duo’s son. In other words, if Jinshi is not 17, he cannot be the Emperor’s brother or son.
Maomao the Princess
Some fans go a little further. They believe that the child of Ah-Duo could have been a girl and was proclaimed a boy for the sake of some political shenanigans. That would work with the time brackets; Maomao is seventeen, so she could have been Ah-Duo’s child. If, for some reason, the current Emperor needed a son, he could have pretended that Maomao was one before claiming that the boy died. In that case, Maomao’s father took her in to prevent anything horrible happening to baby Maomao.
We are not sure we are sold on any of those theories, but we hope for more clues to come our way soon.
