The Apothecary Diaries: the Case of Minister Kounen's Death; Was It Just a Prank?

Episode 9 has two death cases, and one of them is of Minister Kounen. It might have been just a prank, but we wonder now if someone was executed because of it.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • Minister Kounen was killed, apparently, because of salt added to his sweet alcoholic drinks.
  • Maomao’s discovery might have caused someone to be executed because of it.
  • It was likely just a prank and not an actual assassination attempt. Is that why Maomao starts to think about death in Ep. 9?

Episode 9 has a little too much death in it, to the point where Maomao starts thinking about her own possible execution. The case of Minister Kounen’s death might be the reason for Maomao’s mood.

Assassination or Prank?

Minister Kounen was a man who overindulged in alcohol. That alone could have been the cause of his death, but when Maomao finds salt on the jug Minister Kounen drank from, she suggests that it could have been a murder.

Naturally, Maomao is careful with her words as always . But she still might be responsible for someone’s execution now because she discovered the salt on the jug.

From her words, it is clear that she does not think it was an assassination attempt. Indeed, assassinating someone with huge amounts of salt does not sound like a good plan. The assassin would have to know that Minister Kounen cannot taste salt, and that would be a rather unlikely discovery. Most certainly, someone simply wanted to play a prank on Minister Kounen for whatever reason.

After all, it was known that Minister Kounen had a sweet tooth; people knew that his drinks were sweet. Adding salt to a drink that is supposed to be sweet is not an assassination attempt; it is an attempt to get the man angry.

Likely Execution

Unfortunately for the prankster, Minister Kounen did not feel the salt — Maomao assumes it could be due to some illness — and drank so much salty alcohol that he died. And now that Maomao has figured out this mystery, how likely is it that the prankster was found and executed? Possibly, not even the prankster, but some other innocent waiter could have been punished. It is an upsetting thought, and we suspect that Maomao started thinking about executions because of this case. Maomao truly has to be careful with her words; life and death are at stake.
