The Apothecary Diaries: Will Status Difference Ruin the Chances for Maomao and Jinshi Romance?

While it is fun to imagine romance that cannot be held back by social ranks, it would be very difficult for Jinshi to ever be sure of Maomao’s feelings.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) spoilers ahead!

Summary

  • The case of the drowned woman in Ep. 9 makes Maomao think about death.
  • Her life as a taster and mere servant is very expendable.
  • While the fans are into a romance between Maomao and Jinshi, the difference in their statuses means that Jinshi would never know if Maomao wants to be with him or is afraid to say no.

The world of Maomao is very unfair towards women. It is also unfair to people who hold subordinate ranks. As a taste tester, Maomao’s life is extremely expendable, which she has been saying for a few episodes now. How can romance bloom in such ugly, unfair circumstances?

Episode 9

In Episode 9, Maomao gets two death cases to solve. All that death seems to finally have an effect on normally stoic Maomao, and she starts thinking about her own death. As she asks Jinshi to allow her death by poison should he need to end her life, fans wonder if the rank difference is too much for this romance to bloom.

Fans love Jinshi and Maomao and want them together. However, in Episode 9, Maomao points out yet again that her life is expendable while his is valued. Maomao might be an incredibly smart and useful servant, but she is just that, a servant. More than that, she is a taste tester, so her death would not come as a surprise if the food she tests has poison.

And while we could argue that Jinshi has the power to lift her out of this misery, Jinshi’s rank, which is still a mystery, may be in the way of an actual, healthy relationship with Maomao. Should he court her, how can he ever be sure that she actually cares for him and not follows along out of fear of what he could do should she reject him?

Of course, a lot of fans would argue that Maomao is not like that. She would not just agree to a relationship without feelings, and besides, she is already opening up to Jinshi, and their relationship is shifting to something more trusting. Episode 9 is the first one where they had a heart-to-heart, we could say.

But Maomao, while brave, is nothing if not pragmatic. Jinshi’s support could mean so much to her, she might agree to be with him even if she feels nothing for him. And so, the rank difference does seem like a major obstacle in the path to their love, which fans are so impatient for.
