The First Race in MF Ghost Has Finally Ended, But at What Cost

The First Race in MF Ghost Has Finally Ended, But at What Cost

We wanted more racing, but not like that.

Summary:

  • MF Ghost has been ridiculed for its pacing.
  • The main part of this season — the first race — lasted for almost 5 episodes out of 9 already aired.
  • Will the show be able to fit another action-packed race in its 12-episode season?

We've already talked about the response regarding this season's racing anime MF Ghost: people wanted more racing and less fanservice, less people. Well, the main event of the MF Ghost — the first round of the MFG race — started in Episode 4 and ended just now, in Episode 9. And the viewers have really conflicting thoughts about that.

Races should be done in the right way to be fun

On the one hand, having one race stretched for almost a full live episode feels like a bit too much. On the other hand, the races are delightful: they have the weight, the suspense, the thrill, the tangible sense of speed and danger, especially if you watch the show on the big screen. And, truth be told, racing is the best aspect of the anime. The segments where the characters just live their daily life are not that interesting — they seem too dull and boring with the tropes not covered by the high-speed action and sharp turns.

Still, the pacing, despite the race being delightfully entertaining, feels odd. Sure, it's an 80km race with fifteen drivers, and every single one of them had to be in the spotlight for at least a little so the viewers could grasp the tiniest bits of their personalities. And that may explain the pacing and the fact the first race took so long. Admittedly, for those who didn't read the manga, it also added an element of cliffhanger, and the wait for the new episode was more exciting.

Katagiri Kanata, the main character of the show, finished in the top 10 and got a hefty prize for that. He climbed pretty high, using only his skills, in a car that was inferior to the majority of the contestants in terms of powertrain. This part is pretty believable: the show doesn't immediately put him on top, showcase his limitations, and hint at the potential for growth. And that's exactly what's gonna happen, although the growth would apply not to Kanata himself but to his car: in the first episodes Ogata, the mechanic, mentioned that he has some spare parts that can help boost the performance of this Toyota, and the preview of the next episode confirms that the car's gonna go through upgrades.

Boring slice-of-life or high-octane action?

But what concerns the viewers is the timing. The show is scheduled for 12 episodes, and 9 have already aired. The MFG season lasts five rounds, not counting the qualifier, and the first round went for almost five episodes. With that pacing, the show would be infinitely long, and its ratings are not that high to confirm the fact that it will be renewed for more seasons. The anime adapted 44 chapters already, and probably the only arc that the show will be able to cover in this season is the preliminary races, which last until chapter 59. There's, however, the possibility for the show to waste this time on slice-of-life-related fillers.
