Salaryman becomes a healer

The Great Cleric: A Salaryman's Path to Surviving Another World (Seija Musou: Salaryman, Isekai de Ikinokoru Tame ni Ayumu Michi) is a 12 episodes long isekai released during Summer season. And now that both its sub and dub versions are fully released, we feel like examining if it’s really worth your time.

A salaryman who’s about to get promoted somehow gets shot in the middle of a street, and is then sent to another world. Wherever his rotten luck ends there is up to debate, as in this new magical world, he decides to become a healer — a profession he later discovers to be both sought after and detested by the common folk.

See, healers are rare in this world, and since they have a monopoly on effective ways of healing, it allows them to set the prices as they see fit. And in a perfect reflection of no IRL medical system at all, this means that a single medical emergency could lead one to a complete financial ruin. Of course, our protagonist named Luciel decides not to follow in their footsteps, and to make his healing affordable for everyone. He also decides that he doesn’t want to be a liability in combat, and so he joins the Adventurers Guild — where he receives lodging, food and top notch training from the guild master in return for healing guild members. Then, as an officially registered healer, he is summoned to the main temple, and…

An anime about training

Look, this might sound odd, but while this is a good, entertaining isekai comedy, we feel like its first season could be summarized as a “12 episodes long training montage”. Sure, there were happenings, conflicts, hints of romantic subplots and even a dungeoneering adventure as Luciel was tasked with clearing a labyrinth full of undead abominations (something healers are uniquely equipped to do since their magic is a natural counter to undead), but they all happened in-between (or during) ceaseless training. After this, the story might pick up and go someplace more impressive, but for that to happen, we need to receive more than one season.

Currently, there are only rumors about the possible Season 2 of the Great Cleric, with no concrete release date available. As such, we can only recommend its first season if you want a lighthearted isekai story, and don’t mind if it’s spinning its wheels in place. Or, you could check the light novel The Great Cleric: White-Collar Survival in Another World (Seija Musou: Salaryman, Isekai de Ikinokoru Tame ni Ayumu Michi) this anime is based on, published by J-Novel Club.
