The Most Unsatisfying Death in Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Are Fans So Upset?

What do you mean “killed offscreen"?

Jujutsu Kaisen manga spoilers ahead!

  • Sukuna and Gojo’s fight was a very important moment in the manga.
  • Sukuna defeated Gojo and killed him.
  • The exact moment of Gojo’s death wasn’t shown, and fans think the series did Gojo dirty.

Jujutsu Kaisen has a lot of deaths for every taste (not that you’re craving for characters’ death), and while all of them leave you with a broken heart, there are also some that light you up with fury. And Gojo’s one is exactly like that.

Gojo and Sukuna’s fight is one of the biggest and most important moments in the series. It’s just one of the sequences that you know won’t end well. Having Gojo defeat Sukuna would be an incredible outcome, but let’s be honest, there was always a part of you that didn’t believe it would end like that.

After all, defeating Sukuna feels like Yuji’s duty, and no matter how skilled and powerful Gojo was, he was just not meant to be the final hero of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gojo was crucial for the story

Still, Gojo was important. Although he started as a mentor character that was in the story to teach the main protagonists things, he got much more attention. The first part of Season 2 was focused on him and told his backstory. He became one of the main protagonists, and we can’t also forget that he’s an absolute fan favorite.

It doesn’t mean that he can’t die, and, to be honest, it’s even a great writing decision to show that even such a character as Gojo is not safe. No matter how strong you are, you can be defeated. But it means that his death has to mean something.

We didn’t see the exact moment

And what did we get? Gojo is dead, and he was killed offscreen! One frame he seems to be victorious, and then we see him talking to Geto in what appears to be the afterlife. The conversation is followed by Gojo lying on the ground, his body sliced in half. He dies just like that after the promise of a victory. We didn’t see the exact moment of his death. He’s just dead, and you have to accept it. Fans’ outrage is understandable.

Of course, a big portion of the disappointment comes from the fact that we didn’t want to see Gojo die in the first place. But the way his death was executed is still extremely unsatisfying. It’s like everything was in vain, and he died for nothing. He didn’t even cause Sukuna any long-lasting damage. What was the point of the battle, then?
