The New Episode Of Jujutsu Kaisen Gets Criticized For Bad Animation

The dimming and ghosting in the latest episode were an overkill.

So far, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 has been getting nothing but praise for excellent animation work, especially in the battle scenes. However, the recently released Episode 7 is now getting flack for excessive use of ghosting and dimming effects that made it harder to see and understand what was going on during the action sequences.

Ghosting And Blurring: What Are They?

Ghosting is a motion-blurring technique created by duplicating frames and slightly offsetting them in time, making different frames overlap with each other, and dimming means reducing the brightness of the entire screen. The downside of these techniques is that the visual information can become chaotic and blurry, making the anime harder to follow.

Why Are These Techniques Used?

Ghosting and blurring aren’t deliberate choices on the part of the animators created for dramatic effect. The effects are added to all anime series that are broadcast at certain times on Japanese TV to protect the viewers from epileptic seizures. The changes are required by law and are carried out by the TV companies, not animation studios.

The precautions were enforced because of the infamous Pokémon episode “Electric Soldier Porygon" which came out in 1997 and sent hundreds of kids in Japan to the hospital with seizures and other symptoms.

Where Can You Find The Uncensored Version?

There’s a way out for the international audiences: the raw version of this and other episodes of Jujutsu Kaisen will most likely come out on Blu-Ray and DVD, although we don't know the exact release date yet.

Fans feel like there must be a way to address safety issues in the anime that looks better than what we got, although it would require more time and higher financial investment to implement. Furthermore, the issue can be avoided in the future if Toho, the company that distributes Jujutsu Kaisen, allows Crunchyroll and other streaming platforms to air the uncensored version of the episodes with a trigger warning instead of the TV one.

Despite the backlash, most people agree that the episode wasn’t completely ruined by the anti-seizure measures. Even with all the heavy ghosting and dimming, Episode 7 looked brilliant and should not be skipped.
