The Way Witches Are Portrayed in the Witch and the Beast is Quite Peculiar

Are they dangerous or misunderstood?

Summary:

  • The Witch and the Beast Episode 1 focused on Ione.
  • Ione is full of hatred, but there are hints at witches being helpful in the series.
  • Fans can’t wait to see more development of this topic in the future.

Magic is a very tricky concept, and thus there are many different ways of handling witch and wizard portrayal in the media.

Some series make them look like heroes who save people and use their magic for good, while some show the dark and twisted sides of their powers. But which one is The Witch and the Beast (Majo to Yajuu)?

The answer is a bit frustrating: it’s both and neither at the same time.

First episode hints at witched being both good and evil

Ione was the star witch of the first episode. And while our main protagonists, Guideau and Ashaf, were absolutely sure that she couldn’t be trusted as she was a witch, the rest of the citizens absolutely adored her. Ione was some sort of hero for them, a person who protected them from frightening monsters.

When you start watching the Witch and the Beast you think that this might be a series with a “misunderstood” view on witches, but Guideau and Ashaf turn out to be right, of course: Ione brutally dismembers some of her followers to unleash the Hellfire on the city just for the sake of her revenge.

This makes you think “okay, I guess witches are bad in this one,” and Ione’s actions are the best proof for that. Or are they?

When Ione explains her motivation for this horrendous act, she mentions her grandmother, who was also a witch. She saved the city by sealing the origin of the Hellfire, but people still blamed her for everything and got rid of her. Ione waited dozens of years to avenge her grandmother, break the seal and unleash the fire.

They are dangerous, that’s for sure

Besides, there’s such a thing as a witch’s curse, and we know that Guideau was affected by one, that’s why she hates witches with a burning passion. That can only mean one thing: witches are indeed dangerous.

That’s why fans are still unsure whether witches in this series are going to be good, evil or just human-like, with their own motives and emotions. There’s a good chance that witches were on the good side initially, but something made them turn to the dark one.

There are definitely hints that they are kind and helpful, so fans are expecting this idea to get more development in the future. And they can’t wait to see if a kind-hearted witch will be able to change Guideau’s mind about them.
